Campus Crew Update From GCP Campus, Bengaluru
By Harish. Saturday, 3. January 2009, 15:10:43
Firstly a very "Happy & Prosperous New Year" to all the OCC members spread all over the globe.
Meet our team at GCP Campus, Bengaluru - INDIA
That's myself (Harish), team head and Ethesh, the Crew co-ordinator
Syed Tabrez Pasha, the Crew co-ordinator
and this is Nayana, the Crew resource manager.
About us: we are all qualified pharmacists i.e. we have completed our DPHARM from Government College Of Pharmacy, Bengaluru and are now pursuing our Pharma-Graduation from the same college. We won't call ourselves geeks but are definitely passionate about Web & Opera.
Update from our campus:
In our college campus the primary access to the web is via the college library computers to all the college students; the computer lab is currently not a viable option since a hardware upgrade is due (soon).
The computers here were managed until this day, with no dedicated sys-admin. The systems were running Windows SP2 and some had Opera installed by the comp-maintainence guy but were infested by malwares and viruses with outdated anti-virus subscriptions.
This was when we considered merely installing Opera on the other computers would be useless without cleaning the systems first and bringing them up to date w.r.t service packs and other hotfixes (the JRE version was v1.4.3.2 and had Flash 7!). Something had to be done and we approached the concerned teaching faculty and the librarian and tried to make them aware of the situation.
After being told that we won't be getting a dedicated in-house sys-admin, we decided to take that responsibility. After consulting our Pharmaceutical Society President (that's our student union), we spoke to our college Principal and convinced them to provide the necessary permission.
Success at last, yep! We are now the in-house sys-admins of our college library comps.
Computer Lab Challenge - or in our case, the "College Library Computer Challenge" - is on the way to being accomplished: a few more days and our comps will be running up-to-date systems "POWERED BY OPERA" (the main reason for the delay is that we have our internal examinations scheduled in the next week - so we are busy with Indian Pharmacopoeia).
Our next near-term goal is to hold a seminar on the "WORLD WIDE WEB, Its Potential & The Opera", along with a short guide on power-googling. The attedees will make an excellent crowd to approach for the interviews (promising some cool freebie would be the icing!) We have already spoken about this seminar to the computer professor and have obtained the green signal from him
That's it for now, we will keep you updated on the developments.
Greetings From,
OCC GCP Campus, Bengaluru
P.S Any RGUHS, Bengaluru uni members here?
UPDATE: Our college comps are running the latest Opera v9.63, just installed it on all the comps (after cleaning them of course) will put a pic asap
so mission one accomplished!

We also have interview guides and forms at http://my.opera.com/CampusCrew/blog/2008/11/20/new-resources.
If at anytime you want to quickly see if we have memembers at a particular campus, check out the Countries and Campuses file at http://files.myopera.com/campus/Administration/Countries%20and%20Campuses.pdf. It is updated every Friday.
Good luck!
