Installing Opera in College Labs

, , , ...

jester drunk party wizard We are a team of OCC from VIT UNIVERSITY (Vellore)[/SIZE], INDIA. Ours is a big university with about 18000 students belonging to different streams such as Computers, Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, etc. Also, they run under several courses such as B.Tech, B.Sc., M.S, MBA, etc.

It so happened that a new building’s construction got over in our college known as the ‘Silver Jubilee Tower’ (SJT). This building was christened in order to commemorate the 25 years completion of our university academic record in which we received and created several national and international accolades and records. This building is dedicated solely to the two departments –

School of Computing Sciences (SCSE)
School of Information Technology (SITE)

As the completion of the building happened, all our labs were shifted from the older building to this new one.
Some of the prominent and reputed labs present in this building (SJT) are-

Internet and Web Technologies Lab
Cryptography Lab
Networking Lab (CISCO)
Advanced Computing Lab
Database Research Lab

A total of more than 10 labs for students to work during their courses to fulfill practical requirements are present to facilitate us.

Our OCC team took an initiative to approach the administration and get Opera installed on all the systems.

Several objectives of this program were:

1. To promote the excellent browser from Opera.
2. To make students and faculties aware of how to use Opera browser.
3. To provide them a tool for their day to day functioning at labs and opt for alternatives to the primitive Internet Explorer trend that was prevalent till now.
4. To promote a feel of Opera and their products and to expose an entire unknown society to it.

The step was welcomed warmly by the administration and college authorities. They took keen interest in doing the needful and installing Opera on all the machines.

Note: It may be noted that due to certain administrative and cyber-security concerns, all the installing work was done by the staff and we were allowed to take pictures afterwards for the blog.
Also, the work happened over long period of time so we are updating it only now over the Blog.
Students’ response:

The response to the new browser has been encouraging with most of the students now using Opera as their default browser while logging in. They say, its far better and faster than Internet Explorer which they were forced to use till now and even the FTP and Intranet sites which were not totally compatible with it are now fully functional with Opera.

Thanks to Opera, we are our college heroes once again…!!!

      , , , ...

Hi Everyone, I am Gowtham from BITS-Pilani, Goa Campus. This post describes My very first activity as an Opera Campus crew member. cool This happened a couple of days ago, during my summer break.

There is this brilliant institute called SSIT in my hometown Vijayawada (India). They teach many kinds of computer courses including Android development, Java and more importantly Web development. I spent many weekends there during my high school learning a lot of new stuff.

Hey Guys, I have recently contributed to the 1000 Installation Campaign, I went around to install Opera Browser on computers in an Internet Cafe. The name of the Internet cafe is Ewura's Internet Cafe. This cafe actually is being managed by a Kid (about 11 years of age). Apparently, the Cafe is his Mum's and since he is the only child, he has to managed it. cool .

As per my introduction, I asked Owura (as that's what he is called) if he has heard of the Opera Browser. He said yes. But none of the computers were running Opera. So I went ahead and asked him why he hasn't installed it on the computers. He answered that none of the customers has asked for it sad . idea This occurred to me that he hasn't get the chance to get to know the importance of Opera Browser to his Internet Cafe. And y'all know what I did, I started rattling about the importance of Opera Browser to his Internet Cafe. Features covered were:

        [/html:p] [html:p]
      • Opera Turbo

      • Speed Dial

      • Closed Tabs (in the Recycle Bin)

      Opera Turbo

I told him the benefit of Opera Turbo. How it compresses webpages to load faster when on a slow network. The slow network happens at the peak time of the day. Around 19:00 to 20:30. Demonstrated to him how it is switched on and the differences of the pages when the Opera Turbo is switched on and when it is Switched off.

      Speed Dial

He was most fascinated by the Speed Dial feature. Especially when I told him you can edit it with your favorite website. I asked him which of the websites the customers enjoy visiting most. I demonstrated to him how to edit it. Website included in his speed dial were Badoo, My Joy Online, Ghana Web, Ghana's Official Website. Just to mention a few. We were able to integrate 16 of websites in one of the computers.

      Closed Tab The Recycle Bin

With extras for his customers experience, I told him how Opera doesn't do away with his closed tabs when they are closed. But rather keeps it in the Recycle Bin located at the top right corner of the Browser. where by if he wants to go to it again, all he has to do is click the recycle bin and....voala:D .There it is....happy

With the recycle bin feature. This kid gave me the idea that even when the Internet connection is slow, you can pre-opened the webpages after that you close it. when a customer pops in, you just open it through the recycle thereby deceiving the customer. I advised him about this method telling him to go ahead and switch on the Opera Turbo and everything is gonna be alright.

With the installation, I happened to come across two fellow OCC member. yes yes . One is from KNUST. Ebenezer Danso He stays in the same neighborhood with me so when i was going, I sent him with me. I told him about the OCC and he got interested and registered.

The other, Jerry, is a Student of Abetifi College of Education. We live in the same region.

Enjoy the pictures though they are in poor quality since we happened to do this activity in the night..smile

My first installation activity - Opera Installations in Computer Labs!!

      Hi people!

Opera Campus Crew members at IIIT Gwalior had a rocking day recently while promoting Opera at their university. Campus Crew members after having a cafe installation done few days back in Mumbai, planned once again a massive lab installation in undergraduate section of their university which was to be followed by lab installation in post graduation section in upcoming days. But let us talk here only about installation done in 5 computer labs of undergraduate section on 20th December, 2010. So, this event was planned just 2 days before and for this OCC members took the permission from network administrator of our university and respective lab in charges. The installation was done in following labs:-

      1 Communication Skills Lab 1(for IPG only) - 40
      2 Communication Skills Lab 2(for MBA, M.Tech & PhD) - 30
      3 Data Communications Lab - 12
      4 VLSI Design Lab - 10
      5 AASF Cell - 5

As you can see in the pictures, we installed Opera web browser in few less than a hundred computers. The number of computers in each lab where we installed Opera browser are mentioned against their respective labs above.

We started the lab installation early in the morning at 10:30 A.M where we all moved to each lab one by one so that things can be finished up quickly. We also focused on putting up posters and all. We just tried to install Opera browser on maximum number of computers as we were aware of the task being very big and due to shortage of time, we had to complete it on the same day.

As, it was the time where other students were having classes, labs were mostly empty and this helps us a lot to install Opera browser in their computers. But still we tried to explain about various features of Opera to some of the students who were present there.

And this all has been possible because of the wonderful Opera Campus Crew Team of IIITM-G
