Opera 10 World Series | Green Valley College Foundation, Inc., Philippines

, , ,

After a snappy installation of Opera 10.10 on all computers in the computer labs of Green Valley College Foundation, Inc. in Koronadal City, the Philippines, and each unit proudly bearing a "There's an Opera in here" sticker, the Opera Campus Crew in the Philippines had a really fun Opera 10 World Series event - the first one in the campus. We had two sessions for today, one in the morning, and the other one in the afternoon. The first session was attended by more than 60 students, while the second session was attended by around 120 students, plus three college instructors/lab administrators.

Based on past experiences with presentations in other schools, the two presentations today were the best, so far, as we can feel the excitement in the air as the students get to experience an unfamiliar, yet a spectacular browser. The experience was particularly better since everyone had the chance to explore the browser for themselves.

We around an hour late since the administrators still had to set-up the computer and the screen that will be used in the presentations, since we did not have a laptop to use. And we almost shouted our lungs out while speaking since their sound system is in use in another event. :faint:

Kicking off each presentation is George Lemuel talking about Opera Software and its products. Next off is my talk on Opera Education and Opera Campus Crew, followed by a talk on Web Standards and how it is important in our daily lives in cyberspace. After the talk, we had the Opera 10 hands-on demonstration, with Xyrilloid facilitating, and using NetSupport School to better demonstrate the cool features of Opera 10.

As we watched the audience watch the demonstration, we observed that the features that had the most 'ooohs' and 'ahhs' are: Mouse Gestures, Quick Search, and Opera Turbo. In between topics, we had trivia questions to beat sleepiness out from some, of course with Opera swag for the ones with the correct answers.

After the second session, we had a chance to talk to the lab administrators and show them more of the great features of Opera. One that really caught their attention is Opera Unite! One instructor said he will give us a ring when he wants demonstrations for ALL OTHER students of the college, since we only spoke to students with computer-related courses! :yikes: It's also great to know that he will disable IE and Firefox for Opera to the college's EXCLUSIVE browser! He was also happy to inform us that he has installed Opera in the internet cafe that he owns, after experiencing Opera 10.10 that we have installed in the computer labs yesterday.

We are looking forward to having more demonstrations in Green Valley College and, possibly, more computers to install Opera in! And also, with the enthusiasm seen from the audience today, we think that the 20 Opera Campus Crew slots for Green Valley College will be filled in no time!

Introducing Opera Unite Geek-ups!

, , , ...

Following on from yesterday’s launch of the long-awaited Opera 10.10 with Unite, we are launching a new activity initiative for the Opera Campus Crew: Opera Unite Geek-ups!

What is an Opera Unite Geek-up? It’s an interactive and informal gathering where people can come to learn about Opera Unite, and most importantly to explore, play and experiment with its applications and technologies. It'll bring out your inner geek!

Follow our guide to giving presentations, though to increase the interactivity of the Geek-up you should try to hold it in a computer lab or another room where the audience can have internet access. If it is impossible to find such a location on your campus, you can hold it in a regular classroom so long as the presenters have internet access and a projector. Make sure you are familiar with Opera Unite and have explored the different applications before you plan your Opera Unite Geek-up.

Resources
Example agenda: We suggest starting with an overview of Opera and Opera Unite, and have provided a list of tasks you can do on Opera Unite with your audience. We also suggest closing the event with a brainstorm of new Opera Unite applications. You can then send these ideas to me, and the best ideas will be published on My Opera and the Opera Unite blog.
Slideset: For the Geek-ups we have created a slideset about Opera Unite, using Opera’s built-in Web presentation tool, Opera Show. To run the presentation, open the folder and ‘extract all files’ to another folder. Then open the file called "presentation.html". You will see here a linear version of the presentation with speakers notes; click View > Full Screen in your Opera browser (or F11 on your keyboard) to view it in presentation mode.
• Handout: Our Developer Relations team at Opera Software is also working on a handout about how to develop an Opera Unite application... coming soon!
• As usual we can provide you with swag, promotional posters, certificates and feedback forms. Just fill in the request form and send it to us at least three weeks before your event.

Opera is keen to make some campaigns around Opera Unite Geek-ups, so make sure to take photos and even during your event and include them with your blog post. Great opportunities to take photos are during question time, group discussions, interactive tasks, and you can even get the whole group to say hello from your university and country at the end. :D

We hope you are keen to show off Opera Unite through the Geek-ups, and we hope to see some happening soon. :D

Opera Week at Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad

, , , ...

Hi folks,

Firstly, I’d like to say sorry for everyone because I’m late to post the report about the bunch of events ( seminars, presentation, quizzes, Demos, etc) which I organize in my university Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad during our technical fest “Effervescence MM’09’ held from 1st to 5th oct,2009.
Effervescence MM’09 is considered to be the biggest tech-management fest in the country where students from all over India rush to Allahabad to participate. For online events, we get participation from all over the world which includes some of the best coders of the world. The 42 events during the fest anticipated a huge participation of 8,000 students at our campus and a whopping no. of 17,400 students at all which includes online as well as on campus participation.

I thank Varun jain and Yogesh Khatri (other OCC members at my university) for their support in organizing these events.

Opera Mini Seminar in SMKN 2 Sumedang, Indonesia

, ,

Firstly, I’d like to say sorry for everyone because I’m late to post the report about the seminar event held in my school, SMKN 2 in Sumedang, a small city near the foot of Tampomas mountain. Sumedang is around 4 hours drive from Jakarta, capital city of Indonesia. The event was held on Sunday, 12th April 2009.

Mr. Risanto (another Crew member and junior lecturer at Krisnadwipayana University) as the speaker gave information about the Google search engine, social networking sites, and the use of Opera Mini. I also became a speaker, and talked about Opera Campus Crew as the representative of OCC in my school.

This event supported also by OCC SMAN 1 Cimalaka. For your information, there were 261 participants in total (above our target, we had made a target for the participants of 200) The participants were not only from my school but also from other schools. And there wer some teachers who also came along ..

And, here are some pictures from this event:

Certificates for Event Participants

, ,

We understand that in some countries it is normal for students (or even staff) attending any kind of presentation on campus to receive a certificate to show that they participated. As such we have made a certificate (see preview left), based on the design used by Gadjah Mada University for their Opera Mini Party back in December. If your school/university also requires certificates for attendees, simply give us the details marked in square brackets and we can make a PDF version for you.

The certificate can also be signed on the right by a member of your branch (eg the president) or by a member of faculty if your event is run in conjunction with the faculty. (Or if you wish to have both the branch and faculty sign it, we can replace the signature area on the left as well.)

Campus Crew 2008 Wrap-up

, , , ...

At the end of its first calendar year, the Opera Campus Crew and activities have truly kicked off! Here’s a little overview of what the Campus Crew has achieved since it was first launched in early October.

Approximately 878 computers now have Opera installed in 37 computer labs, 3 internet cafes, 1 dean’s office, and 1 campus newspaper office around the world. This spans the Philippines, Mexico, Brazil, Ukraine, Russia, Indonesia and India. Thank you to the 15 campuses who made this happen!

278 students were reached in our 6 Opera Campus Crew presentations about web standards and Opera at University of Debrecen in Hungary, Balti State University "Alecu Russo" in Moldova, and Gadjah Mada University and Gunadarma University in Indonesia. Hundreds more students heard about Opera through other technical events co-organised by Campus Crew members from National Institute of Technology (Warangal) in India and Altai State Technical University in Russia. 17 Campus Crew members also helped us organise 11 of our university tour seminars.

3 articles about Opera, its products or the Campus Crew were arranged by Campus Crew members at Bogazici University in Turkey, Lycée Alexis de Tocqueville in France, and University of Mumbai in India. 138 people have taken the Opera University Survey.

The Opera Campus Crew now has 530 members, across 317 campuses, in 51 countries! In just the past two weeks we have seen Ghana, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, South Korea and Vietnam join the Campus Crew. Welcome aboard!

Opera has also been excited to hear from you about your personal achievements as Campus Crew members – those of you who had your first experiences with public speaking, met new people and built networks and friendships, stepped up to leadership roles, gained more insight into how your university policies work, and developed skills that you might not normally gain from your courses.

We are excited about your achievements in 2008, and glad that you were able to be with us as the pioneers of the new Opera Campus Crew program. :knight: Next year we hope to see even more of our branches actively involved in Campus Crew activity, and extending into other activities like Demo Days, student interviews and the Web Standards Curriculum.

We look forward to working with you in 2009, and best of luck for the new year!
