Mobile Browsing World Series!

, ,

Following the recent releases of Opera Mobile 10 beta and Opera Mini 5 beta, we are launching the Mobile Browsing World Series! This follows on from the Opera 10 World Series, which focused on the landmark release of our latest desktop browser.

The World Series will be a series of Opera events focusing on Opera's mobile browsers, held by Crew members across the globe at times that are most suitable for them and their campus. The Mobile Browsing World Series is a great opportunity if you are looking for a new kind of activity, or if mobile browsing is more popular with students in your country/area than desktop browsing. Even though these products are in beta, you can still spread the word about them.

Activities
There are a range of activities you can do as part of the Mobile Browsing World Series
Arrange a presentation: Arrange a presentation about our mobile browsers. You may even like have as your topic 'Mobile Internet for Beginners', and perhaps focus on first-year students (here is a slideset and example agenda for that kind of presentation).
Hold a Demo Day: Hold a Demo Day focusing on demonstrating Opera Mini and/or Opera Mobile.
Conduct interviews: Hold interviews or do surveys with students about their experience with mobile browsing, and use it an opportunity to tell them more about Opera and answer any questions or concerns about mobile browsing. Use our interview guide as a starting point, and you can customise it with questions based on information you would like to find out.
Distribute Opera Mini comics: Help new users understand how they can use Opera Mini by showing situations where Mini comes in handy, through our Opera Mini comic strips. You could leave one on each chair in a cafeteria or computer lab, or walk around handing them out so you can add a personal touch and answer any extra questions. Check out these posts about members in Indonesia and the Philippines handing out the Opera Mini comics.
Hang up Opera Mini posters: We have updated the Opera Mini posters (in English, Indonesian and Russian) to include the new features introduced in Opera Mini 5 beta. We will shortly add a poster targeting BlackBerry users.

Opera 10 World Series | Notre Dame of Marbel University, Philippines

, , ,

The second of two activities for the Opera 10 World Series in the Philippines was conducted last September 19, 2009 at the Audio-Visual Room 3 of Notre Dame of Marbel University in Koronadal City, Philippines. The audience were primarily composed of first year Information Technology and Computer Science students. Around 100 of the students were present during the event which lasted for around two hours.

Three members of the Opera Campus Crew Philippines were present - myself, Xyrilloid, and George Lemuel. The three of us organized the event for the University, and at the same time became the speakers of the event.

Like the previous event at NDMU, we jumpstarted the day by lecturing about Opera Software and its Products using the slideset at the Links section of the Campus Crew Intranet, with George engaging the audience into the discussion. Up next was a short talk on web standards (using the Open the Web slideset), and even went to as far as comparing the Acid3 Test Results of Opera 10, Firefox, and of course IE, with me and Xyrilloid doing the job. Xyrilloid also did an overview of the mobile browsers of Opera and a talk on Mobile Web for Beginners. Afterwards, the three of us proceeded to the highlight of the event - the launching of Opera 10. A demo was conducted on the cool, new features of the planet's best browser-made even better! As with the previous event, we made use of all the available audio-visual resources for Opera 10.

We had fun during the event, but who had the most fun were the participants of the event, who battled for the prizes that we have brought for them. And it includes an all-new 'Browse Me' shirt as a prize for the quiz show!

After the lectures, we had their flash disks copied with installers of the all-new Opera 10!

We hope that the Opera Campus Crew of NDMU can establish their own OCC branch so that they can push through with the installation of Opera 10 in the university's computer labs!

Opera 10 Beta Slideset Ready!

, , , ...

Are you joining the Opera 10 World Series with a presentation about Opera 10? We have now made available a slideset for you about Opera 10 Beta (in both PDF and Open Office, which is similar to Microsoft Office software but free to download at www.openoffice.org). The slideset explains the features of the newest version of the Opera Web browser and how to use them. Remember of course not to just explain each feature to the students and staff you speak to, but also give them a demonstration in the browser itself. :D

Some other great resources to help you spice up your presentation about Opera 10 Beta are:
Our how-to guide for running presentations and workshops
Opera 10 poster
Opera 10 Beta tutorial video
Opera Turbo tutorial video
Opera Turbo 'Odd and Even' video
Opera Turbo fan videos

This slideset will be updated the day the final version of Opera 10 is released. Note that Opera Unite is not featured in this presentation, as that is at this stage only a ‘labs build’ and not a full feature of Opera 10 Beta. The Opera 10 Beta poster is almost ready to go, I am just waiting on the graphics from our graphics team.

Good luck with your Opera 10 World Series presentations and activities!
