A Developer's point of view

"The True Nature Of The Force"

Is Google being Intrusive?

I've always been kind of impressed about what they've achieved, but there are some things that they definitely do wrong.

The first time I used Google Desktop i love it. But then i started to develop an IE Toolband and saw some ugly stuff. Of course, I downloaded Google Toolbar and said: "This is what i want". I started to program and had to fight my way out through IE "behaviors". Then I unistalled Google's toolbar and found that mine wasn't there too. My "innocent" first thought was: "I've done something wrong". So i repeated all steps and, guess what, my toolbar disapeared again :frown:. Checking all around I've end up tracing changes with the popular RegMon from System Internals. There I discover that the Google Toolbar resets the whole layout of the Internet Explorer toolbars during unistall. I really couldn't beleave my eyes. Some may be surprised by my reaction, until realise that this can NEVER be labeled as a BUG. There is no way this could be a "programming error". This is something you do by mean. For those away from programming, it's like cuting a tree to make sure your cat goes down...
Of course then I gave more attention to Google's methods, and saw things like Google Desktop being loaded on most of the process I had, or Google Talk minimizing my movie or game every time someone messaged me...

I hope this change in the future, they are great on server side, but they're making some mistakes on client side...
