Twice Tagged

I've been tagged by Darko in the 5-Media Tag and by Marcus in the 5-Jobs you would never do tag. So here it is:

1. Last book read - Zen Speaks by Tsai Chih Chung

2. Last t.v. show watched - Medium (She sees dead people too)

3. Last film watched- APOCALYPTO!! It is BRILLIANT and if you haven't seen it yet then you simply MUST! But check out the link first since it may not be your cup of tea. Be aware that the film is intense-there are NO light moments. My favorite line from the film (well there were many) but:

"I am Jaguar Paw, this is MY forest, and I am NOT afraid!!!"

Apocalpyto is directed by Mel Gibson, check it out:

4. Last Song I heard - Bear Necessities from "The Jungle Book" bigsmile

5. Last game played - Play wrestling that turned ugly. I landed on the floor and my opponent had three evil scratches on his shoulder. It was a fair fight.

As to the jobs I'd never do-any job except conservation and or writing/art I think. That was easy.

I'm not tagging anybody else because:

I am Capegirl, this is MY blog and I am NOT tagging anybody!!!

bigsmile

A Mysterious Tale

late last night.

i'm in the kitchen finishing up a few things before bed. as i'm leaning forward to close the window i hear:

CLUNK< CLUNK>CLUNK...as of metal laboring, then scraping very loudly, then, CRASH..the sound of glass breaking....

me: shoot! that's a car accident.

i live just below a bend on a mountain pass, which is basically about 5 metres from my driveway. as i'm looking out of the dining room window to see if i can see anything i hear what sounds like a hubcap spinning and then quiet.

(please don't ask me to reveal just why i know what spinning hubcaps sound like, just trust that i am familiar with the sound)

grab the phone and into the car. as i pull out of the driveway i hear the sound of a car pull over and the sound of two men talking. it's a few minutes later and i see a flatbed trailer parked on the side of the road. making sure i'm safe, i ask the guy if he's ok. there are no marks on the truck, nothing is broken and he looks fine.

"yes" he replies, "i'm fine" and starts the truck and quickly pulls away.

*so what was all that noise?*

i have a quick look around and find a car in the ditch, a few metres from where the truck was parked. it's tires are deep in the mud and there is not a scratch on the car anywhere! mirrors are intact, hubcabs fine, nothing damaged. no broken windows. the car is locked up tight.

intriguing. off to the police station to make a report, because this is just too weird. i mean, i HEARD IT!

anyway, they took it from there..pulled the car out and took a statement.

so, what happened on the bend outside my house last night? any ideas from the Opera detectives?

First Do No Harm. Then Do Some Good!

, ,

This is a true story.

...And it's mighty strange

seated on their individual power trips, a debate that should indeed be over is being quibbled about. yes, that's right. we are now debating over whether we should debate whether global warming and its causes is debatable.

but let's not worry about the fat cats, huh?

TAKE A LOOK -Please click on the photos for explanations and evidence.

i don't want to go into more documentation than is listed here, because the point of this post is ACTION, not debate. There are many websites out there for anybody who wants some more proof.

so, just how much power do you and I have over the future of the planet? just you and i, doing our individual planet-changing thing?

shall we find out?

Since I know that Opera people care about the environment I have created the first ever:

DOING TAG.

you don't have to say anything, but you do have to DO something and I will start first.

by PLANTING A TREE.

A TREE!!!! bigsmile

Just one tree is a buffer against global warming. This is because trees absorb carbon dioxide, and release oxygen thus keeping greenhouse gasses in check. How many trees can save a planet? Why don't we find out how much of a dent we on Opera can make?

I am tagging the following friends and nature lovers to PLANT ONE TREE by the end of the year:

Martin
Darko
James
Rhona
Fati
Nick
LC
Marcus
Aadil
Dillon

There are only two requirements:

1. The tree should be as drought resistant as possible.
(when it gets very, very hot, some trees hold onto the oxygen and release carbon dioxide) eek
2. It should be indigenous to your local area. No planting exotics that don't belong!

If it will also one day provide food or shelter for animals and birds, then you get bonus points bigsmile

I am also asking everybody on this list to tag at least five other people to do the same. You can tag more if you like and that will be even more positive and encouraging. Imagine how many we'll plant? Almost everybody always does what the tag says, right? bigsmile

It would be wonderful if we all posted pictures of our tree-planting ceremony, afterwards, wouldn't it?
Please plant a tree, my friends! Get out there, dig a hole and plant a tree! Plant more than one!

Or come back and tell me why it wasn't possible.

I'll be back soon too, with my tree planting adventure pics bigsmile

Nature can heal nature, if we lend a hand. And most of us have them bigsmile

Elementary, I Thought

When did we begin to dominate nature, rather than utilise and nurture it?

Progress is not the problem, I don't expect indigenous cultures to live the way they once did. The world has changed so much and some of it good. In quiet moments I wonder why very few people understand that this urge to dominate our planet, to rule, to conquer, to become great and powerful might ultimately be what renders it uninhabitable and its people very defenseless indeed.

African bushmen or San are the last of the original hunter gatherers. These quiet and peacable people have used Africa as their larder and shelter for many, many years. They use hand signs to communicate the nature of all the animals they hunt, and their hunting strategy. They have always understood how to preserve as well as utilise.

How much could you say without saying a word?

Now it is understood that one of the most intriguing African tribal cultures will soon be no more. Their language is being captured on audio so that one day we might remember the last of the hunter gatherers.

I feel a moment of silence is appropriate.

Cape Point 360

Sit back, relax and enjoy this virtual tour of Cape Point -where the whales play and baboons steal your chocolates bigsmile

Cape Point is our peninsula national park, and most local people grew up visiting it or driving through to the point and relaxing on one of the beaches. My family certainly did bigsmile We got chased by baboons who stole our food, and one day my dad discovered a shark in the tidal pool bigeyes It was always fun to BBQ at Buffels Bay.

Later I spent a lot of time there, ironically I was chasing the baboons, this time lol Some payback for that loaf of bread they stole. They are a pest, you've obviously realised, but that's not really their fault. They are in real trouble now and numbers are dwindling.

I honestly feel that these don't do it justice, but i offer it to you in cyberland nonetheless. It is heartwarming to share my city smile

Have a look at the picture library to get more of a sense of the "almost" southernmost point of Africa.

Pleased to Meet You?

But...

Who are you?

Are you living your dreams?

Are you stuck in a job you hate and too afraid to take a chance on making your dreams real? Have you forgotten desire and passion? Who stole that from you? Worse? Why did you let that happen? If you've lost touch with who you are, you have, plain and simple. You are selling out.

Who are you? Are you lying to your friends, your kids, your parents, your wife, yourself? Is what you say true? Are you consumed by having your cake and eating it too? Do you care? Can you tell the difference? Do you ever tell the truth? If not, then you're a liar. Don't kid yourself.

Who are you? Are you a good friend? Generous with your time, not selfish? Not cruel? Do you use people? Do you ever actually listen? Do you make promises you don't keep? Ignore people in need? Yes? Then you're not a good friend. Do it different.

Who are you? Do you know how to love? Yourself? Others? The planet? People who don't "mean" anything to you? Things that are not relevant to you, but to others, to the greater good?

Who will you be when you are 80? If you're not being true to yourself now-change it, or when you're 80 you'll still be a liar, someone who gave up on dreams, a poor friend, a human who lost touch with love. Only you'll be slower and sicker and wondering what on earth you were thinking.

Who are you? For the love of all that is good, answer the question. The sun will set on your life, as it will mine.

Who were you?

Breathtaking Nature

I've never been a fan of using the name "killer whales" to describe Orcas. The term "killer" does not feel comfortable in my mouth or as it moves through my soul. I haven't heard anybody calling us "killer humans" as we gnaw on our lamb chops. Many animals kill and so do we, i'ts just part of nature. These whales are magnificent and creative hunters, that have specialised hunting methods which vary depending on geographic location. These methods are passed along to their offspring. They are simply fabulously smart and dedicated hunter families.

I'm pretty sure that I don't have a problem with all of nature being viewed as the killing kind-we all kill. Even rabbits kill carrots bigsmile. I just don't enjoy labels for animals or anyone that set them apart from the whole. This to me demonstrates a lack of understanding of our role on the planet.

I don't agree with keeping these animals (or any wild animal) in captivity, but aquariums and the like really do have some educational value and even if you don't agree with that, they enable people to see and appreciate wildlife, when they otherwise might not have had the chance. People do not conserve what they do not know, and love. (I'd still like to see them all set free 12 Monkeys style) bigsmile Not really. Just set free and allowed to live life as it was intended for them.

Enjoy this breathtaking video of Orcas both in captivity and wild bigsmile set to the perfect music!(which I stole from Fati) Thanks!

Happy, Happy Hearts Day!

You have always been loved, you are loved, now, you will always be loved, more than you know.

I wish you all a day filled with that warmth, and the joy that that love brings.

Come on, enjoy some kissing fun with me:

Encounters

A loving person lives in a loving world. A hostile person lives in a hostile world:

Everyone you meet is your mirror.

- Ken Keyes, Jr. and in this vein, enjoy the pretty pictures in this old video by Enya. It's called Caribbean Blue and is especially fun if there are bats flying outside your window in the falling light. Is this happening anywhere else? Have a great Saturday everybody!

Clap, Clap?

This advert was filmed in Hillbrow, South Africa. Hillbrow is one of the less affluent suburbs here. It just makes me feel inspired and reminds me that any journey begins with a single step, or in this case "clap". bigsmile

I reminds me of when I was a young girl and we used to play rhyming and clapping games out in the schoolyard, during recess. The earliest chart version is by Shirley Ellis.

I hope you enjoy watching it, as I do.

Ive Been Tagged!

By Naughty Marcus, LC the Dog Rescuer and Darko the Bahamas Boy

The Rules

Create a post containing six random, unimportant, or silly facts about yourself.
Include the rules of the tagging in your post.
Tag six people to do the same thing, by commenting on their page with a link to your post.

Six of One and Half a Dozen of the Other:

1. I have a belly button ring.

2. Once, my (then) boyfriend left me sleeping in a room containing a snake tank that housed deadly snakes. He forgot to put the lid back on. Three of them escaped while I was sleeping. yikes We found them under the covers at the foot of the bed-which was just a mattress on the floor back then. Personally I think he was trying to get rid of me bigsmile

3. I have no interest in clothes, make up, hair, jewellery. or next to none, apart from normal grooming. I am the girl for whom "everything feels too tight"..clothes, shoes, belts, i hate them all. Everything I own is loose or if it's not it has lycra in it somewhere so it doesn't irritate me. I have never had any trouble attracting a man with my bare face and "who gives a damn" outlook in this area.

The boyfriends I have had met me 1: covered in paint, 2: covered in flour 3: covered in mud. I simply don't care and likely never will. If it's a really special occasion I might wear lipstick or mascara, both will irritate me. If I have to get all gussied up to attract you, you ain't for me and I'm definitely not for you.

4. I gesture with my hands all the time when I'm speaking. I can't help it, I've tried.

5. I don't like the "69". I'm ok with pretty much everything else (apart from the REALLY kinky stuff..you know the perverse kind..i'm NOT explaining). bug

6. I have been voted: Most likely to have been burned at the stake FIRST at the Salem Witch Trials in
the 1600's. left

bigsmile

The Prey:

Martin, because he loves nature and THAT ROCKS!
Jose, because he seems so open and friendly and leaves colorful comments
Qlue, because he's a mine of interesting info and shares it without seeming arrogant
Sonam, because he has a cool name and good ideas
James, because he's funny and kind and not AT ALL mad
Fati, because we laugh together and she is a great support to me every day

I hope I've left out all the people that have been tagged 50 times already!

Hugs

Thank You

For those who have always been there...and for those who could only stay for a while, and for the Boy Wonder; you are in my heart. Thank you for walking through the carnival with me:

LYRICS

Kind and Generous

You've been so kind and generous, I don't know how you keep on giving
For your kindness I'm in debt to you
For your selflessness, my admiration
For everything you've done, you know I'm bound, I'm bound to thank you for it....

You've been so kind and generous, I don't know how you keep on giving
For your kindness I'm in debt to you
And I never could have come this far without you
For everything you've done, you know I'm bound, I'm bound to
thank you for it....

Oh, I want to thank you for so many gifts you gave with love and tenderness, I want to thank you
I want to thank you for your generosity, the love and the honesty that you gave me
I want to thank you, show my gratitude, my love and my respect for you,
I want to thank you

Oh I want to thank you!!!

"Let Me Tell You a Secret"

from: Postsecret

Everybody has them don't they? Here people are encouraged to share them and bring them into the light, in order to help heal their lives. There are now Postsecret books as well.

Some days are better than others on the site, some darker, some lighter..but all an attempt at healing and expression. I can't fault that heart

New secrets are added every Sunday bigsmile

Traces

they laughed, they cried,
they desired
to unbutton their shirts
and loosen their petticoat
laces

and let soft things slip
between the forked paths
of their fingers

and where they wandered
they left traces.
shiny stones, feathered strands,
sticky, honeyed stalactites.

shadows, ghosts,
mirror mosaics, misted apples
all lost to them

subtly replaced by memories;
nestled behind the eye

Just an Ordinary Day

Walking into the study this morning, I opened the window, sat down at the desk and clicked on my blog link to view any new comments:

bigeyes

Suddenly I heard a terrible sound. "ZWEET, ZWEET, ZWAYT!!!! ZWEET, ZWEET, ZWAYT!!!!"

bigeyes

"woot the heck???"

I look up and to the left, out the window....

(as you can see the moles are now killing the grass which has solved the rampant problem but not the death one)

I spy a strange bird in the tree.

"Woot the HECK are YOU??"

Funny little bird, half bald, grey head, patchy feathers, sticking out all over, looking crazy..squawking madly, frantically...rufous(red) back and longish tail. Then a bigger bird joined him, and they both flew quickly away...with an insect in the beak of the older one....ahhhh? HUH? hmm...

I grab my bird book. (Yes I have a bird book-two really, Sasol and Roberts.) I'm not the "twitcher" I once was, but I'm still one. bigsmile

Thumbing through it I find this little guy:

I'ts a Paradise Flycatcher! The one I saw must have been a juvenile, what with all those feathers sprouting about his head. I've only ever seen an adult bird and only a handful of times. But they're not resident here, only a summer visitor. So I was pleased to know that they're visiting me. bigsmile

meanwhile some strange sunsets again:

...and just enjoying home bigsmile:

Have a ZWEET-ZWEET-ZWAYT day, everybody!

Death of Marilyn Monroe

Is a poem written by Sharon Olds. While many of her poems are far more elegant than this one, for me it has always been one of her most memorable.

Death of Marilyn Monroe

The ambulance men touched her cold
body, lifted it, heavy as iron,
onto the stretcher, tried to close
the mouth, closed the eyes, tied the
arms to the side, moved a caught
strand of hair, as if it mattered,
saw the shape of her breasts, flattened by
gravity, under the sheet,
carried her, as if it were she,
down the steps.

These men were never the same. They went out
afterwards, as they always did,
for a drink or two, but they could not meet
each other's eyes.

Their lives took
a turn—one had nightmares, strange
pains, impotence, depression. One did not
like his work, his wife looked
different, his kids. Even death
seemed different to him—a place where she
would be waiting,

and one found himself standing at night
in the doorway to a room of sleep, listening to a
woman breathing, just an ordinary
woman
breathing.

Do you enjoy the poem? Does it mean anything to you? I'd love to hear any impressions you might have. Incidentally I'm not really interested in scholarly interpretations, I'd like to know what it means to you, presuming that it strikes any sort of chord at all. This is the way poems are meant to be read, in my opinion, though thousands of stuffier individuals would love to disagree smile

More of her work HERE in the right hand sidebar. Look out for "True Love", it's a WONDERFUL poem.

hugs and love
