Clap, Clap?

This advert was filmed in Hillbrow, South Africa. Hillbrow is one of the less affluent suburbs here. It just makes me feel inspired and reminds me that any journey begins with a single step, or in this case "clap". bigsmile

I reminds me of when I was a young girl and we used to play rhyming and clapping games out in the schoolyard, during recess. The earliest chart version is by Shirley Ellis.

I hope you enjoy watching it, as I do.

hey GF, do you remember "say, say, my playmate, come out and play with me!?" we did that one a lot at my school. i think "i wrote a letter to my love" was my favorite when i was very young".bigsmile glad for the memories it evoked! love

i believe that many of these songs were created by slaves working out in the fields, and they still sing them at Mardi Gras. i wonder if this one was too? maybe Dillon will stop by and tell us bigsmile

Hello Larry and thanks for stopping by. It's so much fun and so energising. I really love the boy with the afro...."huh?" lol and the little boy at the end! and the way they end the ad with the girls who started the whole thing, admiring their clapping chain. bigsmile

Fatimahzenya Friday, February 1, 2008 4:33:38 PM

Hey GF

Yes we use to have all kinds of songs to clap to.
and of course we made our own too lol

Yes it sounds like a game the slaves could have used to keep
their sanity and their traditions alive.
