Rainbow
It was not the best journey back from work tonight, pouring down wiuth rain, queues on the motorway and the wife calling to say the washing machine had died.
Then the rain stopped, the sun started to break through and there in front of me was the most vivid and gorgeous double rainbow I have ever seen.
Suddenly life seemed a whole lot better

Golf
Ok so I know I am going to be blogging to a lot of upset golf fans in the states but just humour me for a bit.
I am of a generation for whom the Ryder Cup was just another 3 days of getting the pants thrashed off us. Messrs Nicklaus, Watson, Miller, Palmer, Weiskopf ET all used to pulverize the best that we could put out.
That’s why it now means so much in the same way as winning the Rugby World Cup after years of Welsh, Australian and New Zealand dominance over us.
So humour those of us of a certain age as we enjoy today and wallow in some glory that makes the past seem partly a bad dream.
PS if you find any youngsters crowing about a European win they have no excuses, they are just young whippersnappers who know no better.

Middle East
Many years ago I read a book by the actor David Niven in which he recalled a couple of conversations with Winston Churchill, the first took place in the dark days of 1941 when Britain’s future looked bleak. Asking Churchill about the prospects of victory the reply was “Mark my words something cataclysmic will happen”.
Niven next met the great man a few months later after Pearl Harbour and asked how Churchill was so sure that the “Cataclysmic event would occur. The reply was “Because young man I study history”.
How sad therefore that today’s politicians have not studied history, had they done so maybe they would have realised that trying to subdue the people’s of the middle east by force will always end in failure.
From the Crusaders through Imperial Britain and the Soviet Union many have tried and failed.
Now the “Coalition” is trying and failing miserably with thousands of innocent lives being lost and the Iraq situation appearing worse for the common man than it was under Saddam Hussein.
Maybe it is to late now for this generation but hopefully our children’s generation will learn the lessons of history and to quote Churchill again realise that
“Jaw Jaw is better than War War”

Music
Working from home today tucked away in my little den with the PC,Stereo and TV
So whilst working what shall I listen to, I hunt through the CD’s but I am in one of those mmoods and nothing really takes my fancy.I do however have a good if rather old stereo system with a turntable and Tape player so I start trolling through my old tapes and LP;s to see what I have from the dim and distance past
So now as I work merrily away I am listening to a tape of Focus and the album Moving Waves from the 1970’s
As we communicate across the net with 21st century technology do we all listen to MP3’s or am I not alone in still listening the music of my youth in its original format

Church, God, Religion
We had a baptism at church this morning and it was one of those where the families are there because it’s the proper thing to “Have our Scarlett done”
They obviously had no faith as was shown by the way they failed to join in with the hymns and prayers and even during the Baptism itself they just mumbled along
In addition their behaviour was appalling talking during the sermon and communion and the kids running about all over the church
It then crossed my mind that had this much disrespect been shown in the Worship Centre of another religion these people would have been lynched or even worse, so as Christians don’t we care about how people behave in our places of worship.
Of course we do but despite their behaviour these people had chosen to come today and so the least we could do was make them welcome in the hope that the words they heard might just sink in.
Many people disagree with my faith but hey it’s a free world and nothing they say ;however insulting, will shake my faith in my god.
Why cant we all be like this ?
I Mean to quote the great Brinsley Shwarz “Whats So Funny About Peace Love And Understanding”

Football
When I was younger I used to run around a football pitch getting angry (Usually at my lack of ability)
I used to stand on the terraces ar Molineux (Home of the mighty Wolverhampton Wanderers for any heathens out there) getting angry
Now I spend Saturday afternoons wandering around a tree lined ground taking photographs of younger men getting angry and trying to play football.
Every so often I chew the fat with like minded former players as we quietly mull over "Not Like It Was In Our Day" and we politely applaud when a goal is scored, occasionally if feeling really benevolent we will applaud an opposition scorer.
It was fun to play football in my youth but its a much more relaxing Saturday afternoon in my 50's watching photographing and chatting.

Pope
So now the Pope has followed Blair and Bush by using Hoily Roman Emperor,Crusader style language about Islam and giving the fanatics more ammunition with which to stir up anti Western and anti Christain feelings across the Muslim world.
I believe in free speech and in a perfect world we would not have to mind what we said, all would be robust enough to take critisism without going ballistic, sadly however that is not the case and we do have to mind our P's and Q's.
So how come highly educated religious and political leaders of the Western world show the subtlty of a charging Rhino with their comments and pour more oil on troubled waters when what is needed is more foam.

Its a rare occurrence in this multi media world when we have Sky and cable so that even with Freeview we have tens of channels to watch all day and night, however I work away a lot and therefore spend time in hotels many of which are restricted to just the 5 terrestrial channels.
It’s at times like this that 2 things happen
Firstly you realise how much garbage there is on terrestrial TV and you start to really appreciate the joys of Discovery etc.
Secondly you thank god for the radio, whether it be 5 Sport live or Wogan on Radio 2 or the quality of the news on Radio 4 at least it is quality and varied, without it I would be forced to watch the same news repeated ad museum on BBC or Keith Chegwin on ITV.
I don’t know if the rest of the world has the same problem but at least we in the UK can say that the longest running media format is still going strong and giving us quality broadcasts

Whilst reading a Blog by Musickna the thought came to mind about bands that I saw in their infancy that were rubbish and later became superstars
I have 2 examples,Queen supporting Mott The Hoole back in the early 1970's were truly appalling and after about 10 minutes we retired to the bar to wait for Mott to come on
Now millions remember Queen but only a few die hards like me remember Mott
Secondly Supertramp after Crime of the Century but before Breakfast in America had an awful evening and there was not even a bar to retire to
So when you come back from a gig thinking what a waste of money console yourself hat you may be able to brag,"I saw them before they became great" at some time in the future
