Ferenc Puskas RIP

,

Just heard the sad news about this great footballer,I was in nappies when he was at his peak but what I saw on those grainy old black and white clips still stood out as a player of phenonenal talent.
My dad who saw all the greats of that era spoke in hushed tones of the night he watched Puskas play

I hope this weekend at grounds around the world todays millionairre so called stars will stand in silent tribute because the world of football has lost one of its all time greats

There's Gratitude For You

,

Most Saturdays I go along to my local amateur football club and take a number of shots of the game that then go onto the club's website,it takes mre about 3 hours each saturday to process the shots and upload them but It's my way of giving something to the club.

Now on the Website message board the managewr of one of the teams has moaned that I so far this season haven't taken any shots of his team, now I tend to chose which ever match I think will be best ansd watch and photograph that.

Am I being unfair in thinking that whilst he's in the bar on a Saturday after the game and I'm sweating over a hot keyboard that maybe he should show a bit more gratitude and patience, after all we still have 2/3rds of the season left for me to photograph his team.

The Night Football Died

Well maybe not all football but certainly for me at the highest level the Barcelona Chelsea game was a disgrace, the cancer of diving feigning injury and waving imaginary cards to get opponents booked or sent off has been around for a while now at the top echelons of football but last night took it to a new level.

I was reminded of Edmund Burke's comment that "The only way for EVIL to flourish is for GOOD men to do NOTHING" and this appears to have come to fruition in top class football, the good men have sat around wringing their hands whilst the cheats (and that is what they are) have been allowed to flourish and take over what was once a beautiful game.

I am grateful for 2 things, firstly that I have my local amateur team to watch on a Saturday afternoon for football of a lower standard is played in a much higher spirit and secondly the fast forward on the video so that I can get through the cheating and watch the few bits of half decent football that remain in the professional game today

The England Football Team

,

I know that this will never be read by the England footballers but after the debacle of Croatia I needed to get it off my chest.

I have followed English sporting performances in all sports for over 40 years and have enjoyed both high’s and low’s. from the World Cup of 1966 through the athletic feats of Coe, Ovett,Cram,Thompson.Christie et all to the glory of the Ashes triumph last year.

I have also witnessed gallant and not so gallant failures over the years, many more than the successes but still taken comfort from the fact that at least our teams and individual sportsmen and women have at least given of their best (100%).

Sadly over the last few years (Mostly the Eriksson years) I have seen England’s very wealthy and highly lauded players give performances that became less and less impressive and more and more inadequate.
Wednesday in Croatia was however the nadir, a team of millionaires gave a performance lacking in effort and application and worst of all a total lack of passion, sportsmen and women can be excused a lack of form but especially when representing their country they cannot give less than total effort.

So to the millionaires on that pitch on Wednesday night I would just say that you have let me and millions of others down and I hope you are proud of yourselves, never again must a night like Wednesday happen and never again must an England sporting team perform without demonstrating a pride in their country.

Football Cheats Rule OK

Its all across the Sports pages of the English papers about the Tottenham Hotspur player Didier Zakora blatantly diving to earn a penalty in the match against Portsmouth yesterday.
Many are saying that this regular occurrence is a result of the influx of foreign players into the Premiership and it never happened in the good old days before the foreign influx, but is that a fact or are we being Little Englanders again and blaming all our problems on other nationalities?

Back in the 1970’s I remember particularly Francis Lee falling over with monotonous regularity getting penalties for Manchester City and Derby County and yet little was said about his antics because proof of diving (Cheating) was sketchy to say the least, nowadays with Sky TV cameras getting shots from every conceivable angle we can get all the proof we need.
So is it not time that technology was used to benefit the sport and either let the 4th official use it to rule on controversial decisions or at least use it to punish the offenders retrospectively.

This technology has been used in other sports (Cricket, Rugby and Gridiron amongst others) for many years to the benefit of all concerned so why not in Football, are the powers that be scared of identifying the depths that the “Beautiful Game “ has sunk to or are our mega rich clubs and players now beyond the law and allowed to cheat their way to victory as a matter of course.

I believe that this must be addressed now otherwise this cancer of cheating will become an epidemic and the game that so many of us love will become a joke and no longer worth watching.

Grumpy Old Football Supporters

When I was younger I used to run around a football pitch getting angry (Usually at my lack of ability)
I used to stand on the terraces ar Molineux (Home of the mighty Wolverhampton Wanderers for any heathens out there) getting angry

Now I spend Saturday afternoons wandering around a tree lined ground taking photographs of younger men getting angry and trying to play football.

Every so often I chew the fat with like minded former players as we quietly mull over "Not Like It Was In Our Day" and we politely applaud when a goal is scored, occasionally if feeling really benevolent we will applaud an opposition scorer.

It was fun to play football in my youth but its a much more relaxing Saturday afternoon in my 50's watching photographing and chatting.
