The Captains Musings

Photography is one of my great passions and has been for over 30 years, back from the days of film and manual everything right the way through to today with Digital Imaging, instant review of shots, sharing around the world etc, etc.

Throughout all this time I have has one great gripe that persists today, people saying “Oh I only take snaps not real photographs, I am not sure if this is a British disease of self denigration in the photographic sphere or if it happens around the world but it drives me barmy. Whatever you are photographing especially in this day and age on digital equipment you can easily compose your shot, the cameras will give you accurate exposure and immediate review so it is only your own lack of belief holding you back in getting a very good shot.

A good shot does not need to be a masterpiece to rival Bailey or Cartier Bresson but today in the digital age it can be crisp and clean and not have lampposts growing out of people’s heads. So work on it people, do not accept the first result that comes out of your camera, look at it again retake it or get it on the computer and tidy it up because we can all have results we are proud to show the world.

Lets face it if you spend thousands on a holiday and come back with rubbish shots because you failed to try hard enough all you can rely on is your memory and that will fade in time. We do not say that we are bad drivers because we lack the skills of a Schumacher,we have worked hard to make our driving as good as possible, so lets do the same with our photography and have wonderful shots all over our Opera Pages.
