With 31 laps to go Glock has rear right suspension failure coming on to the start finish straight. He loses control and hits the pit wall at an oblique angle with the car going backwards. On the tv it looked like a terrible accident, instantly bringing out the safety car. It was reminiscent of the crash the Ralf Schumacher had several years back at Indianapolis resulting in Ralf being knocked unconscious. Glock gets out of the car with a little help. He holds his lower back obviously in tremendous pain, leaning against a pole for support, importantly he is standing by himself with a little help.
Pit lane open, 30 laps to go and everyone into the pits except a few lower running cars but most importantly Hamilton stays out. While exiting the pits Alonso is pushed across the white line by Vettel.
With 30 laps to it’s Hamilton, Heidfeld, Piquet Jnr, Massa, Kubica, Heikki, Vettel , Alonso and Kimi.
24 laps to go and Alonso is held up by Vettel allowing Kimi and Rosberg through. A lap later and Kimi takes Vettel on approach to the hairpin. The onboard shot from Kimi’s car shows him giving a Vettel a little wave with his rand hand which was just hilarious.
18 laps to and Rubens tags Coulthard in the stadium section. It was actually David’s fault who didn’t see him coming through and shut the door on his front wing.
Lewis in and out of the pits behind his teammate Heikki. He follows him for about 2 laps before we see Ron Dennis pressing a button on the pit wall and Heikki easing to the outside at the hairpin allowing Hamilton through.
14 laps to go and Heidfeld is in giving Nelson Piquet Jnr the lead for the first time in the race, and I think ever in a Formula One race.
13 laps to go and Hamilton has closed right up to Massa. It’s only a matter of time before the inevitable.
11 laps and Hamilton eases past Massa at the hairpin with very little resistance from the Brazilian.
8 laps left and Hamilton takes Piquet to take back the lead of the race. On the same lap Kimi puts in a move to pass Kubica.
The next few laps are fairly quiet. Back to back victories for Lewis Hamilton both incredible drives. His confidence levels at all time high, he looks unstoppable. He can win from just about anywhere on the grid. Glock was released the next day from hospitable with no injuries.
Final Standings:
1. Lewis Hamilton, simply in a league of his own. His pace over the next closest competitor is unbelievable, if he continues like this he could wrap up the championship before the end of the season.
2. Nelson Piquet Jnr, was is the right place at the right time, but more than that when he did get the lead he was putting in some good lap times. Hats off to him for admitting that he was very lucky to get second place, other drivers would not publicly say the same.
3. Felipe Massa, had the pace for second but just slipped up. Once he saw Hamilton in mirrors he just let him by without the slightest of challenges.
4. Nick Heidfeld, once again getting the points from a lacklustre afternoon. He should be happy with the position.
5. Heikki Kovalainen, with his teammate in the same car driving in another league you would expect him to at least be able to take second or third at most.
6. Kimi Raikkonen, a few overtaking moves but still nowhere near the front runners. The reigning world champion is in trouble.
7. Robert Kubica, will be terribly disappointed with his result
8. Sebastian Vettel, another point in a race where he bullied a double world champion out of the way
