F1 Qualifying (Italy)
Saturday, 13. September 2008, 23:40:03
It never rains in Monza. Or so we thought. All practise sessions were run in wet or damp conditions and qualifying was no exception.
The first qualy session claimed the usually suspects. The hondas of Rubens' and Button, the williams of Nakajima, the force india of Sutil and the renault of Piquet. Of the force indias it was a bit strange that Sutil was eliminated as he was quick all weekend in the practise sessions, easily finishing in the top ten each time. His teammate Fisichella on the other for the first time in their short history got his car into the second qualy session. Kimi finished somewhere in the teens cutting it pretty close. By the end of the session there was a dry line forming on the track.
Session two and once again everyone is out at the green light. But as the second session started the rain picked up again. The pick of the bunch is clearly the other Finn Heikki. He consistently improved his lap times finishing top of the time sheets. Other noteable driver were from Glock and Webber and both of the Toro Rossos. Hamilton gambled by going out on intermediate tyres when everyone clearly had received the message that there was more rain. That decision cost him dearly as he changed to full wets but couldnt improve leaving him to start from 15th place. Kimi also being caught out in the slippery conditions finishing just a place ahead in 14th but one and a half seconds ahead of Lewis. The BMW of Kubica was also eliminated as the session just got worse. Coulthard and Fisichella were the other 2 eliminated. Massa scrapes through in 10th.
Session 3 had both the Toro Rossos, both the Toyotas, one Renault, one McLaren, one Ferrari, one BMW, one Williams, one Red Bull. Once again Heikki easing to the top of the time sheets. But pole position was being regularly swopped by Heikki, the two Sebastiens, Glock, and once was Heidfeld. The standing pools of water at the chicanes both on and off line made this a real test for the drivers. Midway through and Vettel takes pole. Heikki down to second and Bourdais up into third making the Toro Rossos, first and third. In the dying seconds Webber gets into third place. Session over and Heikki still on track. The only man standing between Vettel and his first ever pole. Crosses the line and stays second.
Sebastian Vettel becomes the youngest ever pole sitter. The Toro Rosso team go beserk in their garage. With that, it also means that a Toro Rosso has finished a qualifying session at number one in each of the last 3 races.
Another issue for the race is that if it is a wet race some teams may not have enough wet weather tyres. Hopefully it is a wet race, else the most powerful cars will just ease their way to the front of the field. But then again the Toro Rossos have a customer Ferrari engine powering them so they have a fighting chance against anything else on track. This is gonna be one good race
