The Machinist (movie)

Since i had never heard of this i had no expectations and for movies thats always a good thing. It basically is about a normal everyday guy, in a monotous job, with a bad case of insomnia. Well according to the movie its not because he hasnt slept for a year, i know lack of sleep doesnt kill but for one year i would assume you would die.
Another shocking aspect of this movie is how much of weight the star, Christian Bale had to lose for the role. Apparently before shooting he was 180 pounds...at the time of shooting he was 120 pounds and you can see it. He looked like skin and bones.
So what makes this movie so good is how you get sucked into it following the main character. Being there with him as he falls, questioning his sanity. You want to know whats going on just as badly as he does. You just get lost with the character, not knowing whats real and whats a dream. Well he doesnt sleep at all so it would imply everything is real, right?
Some nice directing, using dull colours mostly adding to the sombre nature of the movie. There still is a bit of colour at times which does detract from the nature of the movie. Also smartly done not spoonfeeding the viewer everything leaving some parts open to your own conclusions.
If you ever suffered with insomnia(which a surprising number of people havent) or worked in a dead end job you have got to see this movie. Not everyones cup of tea. Its no slasher flick. It gets into your mind. Keep the brain switched on for this one.
