Lydia aka Shum Din-Ha
(1945-2008)

Veteran Hong Kong actress Shen Dianxia, also known as Lydia, died Tuesday morning(Feb.19 2008) in Hong Kong, Taiwan media outlet TVBS reports.

Lydia Shum Din-Ha, known as Fei-fei, or Fatty, and one of Hong Kong's most popular comedian actresses, died of liver tumor and other complications on Tuesday morning in a hospital in Hong Kong.

Local channel Cable TV News said in a report she died of liver tumor in Queen Mary Hospital. Shum, also known as Lydia Sum, was 62 years old.

Shum was born in July, 1945 into a well-off large family in Shanghai and ranked the sixth among the family's nine children. She made her film debut in 1960, joined the Hong Kong-based Shaw Brothers, a famous film company, as a child actress and rose to stardom with the free-to-air television broadcaster TVB's variety show Enjoy Yourself Tonight, which was hugely popular in Hong Kong for over 20 years. With her signature smile, dark-rimmed glasses and comic hairstyle, Shum established herself as a comic and dramatic actress.

Shum married Hong Kong actor and singer Adam Cheng Siu-chow in 1985 after they lived together for 10 years. The two split up in 1987, only eight months after their daughter and only child Joyce was born.

Shum, dogged by numerous health problems, including chronic ailments such as cholangitis, diabetes and hypertension, was lately admitted to hospitals repeatedly. She was diagnosed with liver tumor and cancer around the gallbladder in 2006 and was discharged from hospital in July 2007 after an operation to remove a third of her liver. But she collapsed at home and was rushed to hospital in October.

I heared of the news yesterday, one day after she left. I was reading the news on Tencent QQ window and suddenly I found a title named "the funeral of Shum Din-Ha will be held in three days". When I read it, I was a kinda shocked. I heard she was badly ill but I just couldn't believe that the day finally came. I felt so sad and couldn't help sobbing as soon as I was sure of the news. I'm so sorry to her death.

She's one of my favorite artists cuz she was very hilarious and always made me and my family laugh happily on the screen. It has been many years since I watched her shows. Her sense of humor impressed me when I was still little.

I watched a TV show which the TVB made to mourn for her. I was crying through viewing it. From her colleagues, I learned that she was a gifted TV host, an excellent and professional actress, a positive individual, a tenacious soldier, a trusted friend and a great mother.

There were some clips about her whole actress life in the show. And there was a sentence she said impressed me most. "Try to do everything more than perfect cuz though sometimes we are not in the right mood, we still can make it perfect."

On her way of fighting against the cancer, I remembered her words when she was awarded on a show. "I won't give up my favourite career as a actress, as I won't give my life up!" She left eventually, but her spirit will always be there.

The thing that she most worried about when alive was the future of her daughter Joyce. She played roles of mummy and daddy in Joyce's childhood. Though grew up from a broken family, Joyce still could get great love from her mother. I remembered in my childhood, I always saw the little cutie singing on the stage with her mom.
From the relevant vid, we know Lydia made a new year wish no long ago, she wished Joyce would be loved by everyone since she left. It will. Fei-fei, rest in peace, you will always live in our hearts!

Stressful Life

One of my friends always looks so tired in class, sometimes she even falls asleep. Once, I told her to make sure to get enough sleep, or she would fall behind with the study like this. She explained that she couldn’t sleep well at night. When she laid down, there would be many things that were to solve, such as “How to make a progress on study”, “did I forget something important to do today?” The more she thinks of the matter, more difficult she could fall asleep. That’s what we call pressure to prevent her from resting at night. And this is just a part of our social life. It’ obvious that most students have to work under great pressure, let alone the whole society.

It’s an age of “information explosion”. The competition among people becomes fiercer and fiercer. It’s said that people’s lives now is becoming more and more stressful. Most people want to improve their lives, so they work harder and harder, and often keep themselves in tension. In my opinion, people who feel stressful could be divided into two groups: those who tend to be a perfectionist and those who can’t catch the pace of the age. The former ones often push themselves forward. They want to make everything perfect. So the stress comes from their desire. To be exact, the latter are facing lots of questions which are produced by the modern society. There are so many important things or trifles that people have to face so the stress is from the society for the latter.

Relax! —— A word which we used to talk to ourselves when the stress almost stifled us. As a matter of fact, it’s not that easy to calm down and easily escape from the pressure. Maybe the easiest way is to take a deep breath to refresh our mind. Some psychiatrists advise watching a scary movie. It’s said that our nervous tension would relax to a large extent viewing scary movies. There are also some other ways to solve the problem. A “pillow battle” was held recently in a square of a country. It provided a place for people to reduce pressure. I’d like to work with leisure to reduce the unavoidable pressure.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found some tips on stress from http://www.familyservices.govt.nz/info-for-families/skip/stress.html, it may help.

Tips on Stress

Things that could help

•Think about how you react to certain situations. Are there some things that wind you up more than others? Talk about these with someone else and think of ways you can manage.

•Sometimes just accepting "I can’t do anything about it, it’s not my problem" is a relief.

•Set realistic expectations. If you’ve got small children trying to keep the house really tidy is impossible. Set aside a time at the end of the day when you all put the toys away together.

•Exercise. Try to go for a walk three times a week or dig the garden.

•Set aside some time for yourself. Sit and read a book for 10 minutes, or watch TV. Don’t spend all the time when your children are asleep or busy rushing around trying to do things. Use that time for yourself. Unplug the phone and take a bath, write down your feelings, mow the lawn, lie in the sun, ring a friend.

•Make friends. Go to a support group, or join Play centre or Kohanga Reo. Talk with parents of the children your child plays with, as this will lead to friendships that can support you.

Things that won’t help

•Don’t be critical of yourself, no one does everything perfectly all the time.

•Try not to be aggressive towards others, take a deep breath and walk away.

•Make sure you don’t fall into the trap of not eating enough, eating too much, drinking lots of coffee or alcohol.

•Yelling can just wind things up and leave you and your children feeling upset.

•Sometimes going out and about seems too hard and too exhausting. Friends and family are your best support. If you don’t know anyone, think about places where you might meet other parents who are in the same position as you – Playcentre, Kohanga, kindergarten etc.

•Try to avoid getting so tired that everything seems too hard. Try to lie down and relax when your children are asleep. Go to bed early.

Managing your day

When children are small there always seems to be so much to do.
Try to set up routines so you don’t have all the chores piling up on top of each other. Be prepared to alter routines if something else comes up. Don’t worry about the housework if it’s a sunny day and you can go for a walk, or if someone drops in for a chat.

Setting some goals

Set priorities. Some things are more important than others, try to sort out what you really need to do and do other less urgent things when you have time. Set yourself small goals so you feel you’ve achieved something every day. For example you could aim to throw out everything in the fridge that is past its use-by date, or you could aim to spend time reading to your child.
If you are asked to do something that will make you stressed, say no.

If you’re worried

If you are worried that you are feeling very stressed, low or depressed, talk with your doctor.
"I had post-natal depression. I was far away from my family and needed someone to talk to. I talked to my GP for about an hour and when I got back to the car my partner said I was a different person."

Geordie

I took a test on mental age on line just now, but found a melody by chance.
Geordie, which is oringinated from a British folk song, is a sentimental song ever interpreted by Qi Yu.

As I walked out over London Bridge
One misty morning early
I overheard a fair pretty maid
Was lamenting for her Geordie

O my Geordie will be hanged in a golden chain
T'is not the chain of many
He was born of King's royal breed
And lost to a virtuous lady

Go bridle me,my milk white steed
Go bridle me,my pony
I will ride to London's court
And to plead for the life of Geordie

O my Geordie never stole nor cow nor calf
He never hurted any
Stole sixteen of the King's royal deer
And he sold them in Bohenny

Two pretry babies have I born
The third lies in my body
I'd freely part with them everyone
If you'd spare the life of Geordie

The judge looked over his left shoulder
He said:"Fair maid I'm sorry
Said:Fair maid you must be gone
For I can not pardon Geordie

O my Geordie will be hanged in a golden chain
T'is not the chain of many
Stole sixteen of the King's royal deer
And he sold them in Bohenny

A LETTER TO PARADISE

My dear Granny:

I was just told that you had rest in peace. You're flying towards the paradise like an angel, alone. I wonder that how far is it from the earth? Will you be suffered on the road? Maybe it is a long journey, We gonna miss you very much! (I can't help expressing in a Chinese way.)

You know what? I am so desperate and depressed for your leaving. I am so sorry. I was playing games to idle away the time when I was told the bad news. I'm wasting my life. Forgive me, my dear granny.

I don't have the talent to use chopsticks. I still remember last time we gathered together to have dinner during the Spring Festival. Everyone around the table was making fun of my clumsiness except you. You looked so serious. I sat next to you as usual. When my mom and aunts were joyfully discussing about how severe you were to treat them while they were learning to hold chopsticks, you were showing me the elegant way to hold them. I am still learning that today, but forgive me still often drop food between them.

Josef gave a lecture on Cantonese in class this morning. That reminds me of the lullaby which you and mom usually sang to hush me to sleep. It was the peaceful moment I won't forget. Angels whispered "to" me, they remind me of your considerateness. I know you must miss me at that time, so your concernment came to me.

You are everywhere, I am not alone. I forgot that you are not alone, because grandpa is right there waiting for you. You have earned a vacation, so it's off to paradise for a relaxing break, with grandpa. Do enjoy yourselves. I'll see you when I get there.

Lovingly yours,
Cecilia L

Happy New Year!!

Happy new year, everyone~
We are all celebrating for the Spring Festival during these days.
But it seems that the atmosphere of the celebration in recent years is not that strong as before.
I still remember the days in my childhood during Sping Festival, it used to be very crowded in the streets. And everyone in the street were full of joy. And there used to be many curious things that we couldn't find in the usual days, as the "fun march". I don't know what it really called, but it's really fun.(to be continued...)

To Earn a Chromatic World-- Don’t melt away all recollections of another way of life in another place

On the issue of the suspension of a Muslim woman assistant teacher in the Yorkshire town of Dewsbury for refusing to remove her veil at school, Tony Blair considers the veil as a “mark of separation” and fully supported it. But if she is forced to remove the veil, her right is infringed. Though it’s a little bit difficult for them to distinguish from each other, I believe there will be a way to solve this kind of problem. The people of some countries, like Pakistan, are born Muslim. They have to wear veins since they are born. It’s very difficult for them to betray their religion. As the author Salman Rushdie observed:” No society, no matter how tolerant, can expect to thrive if its citizens don’t prize what their citizenship means.”

If the cultural and the religious practices don’t does harm to the country, I think the government should let the immigrants to maintain them. Take the United Stated for example, it’s known as a “melting pot”, for immigrants from all parts of the world. The foreigners have sometimes remained culturally and linguistically what they were in their native lands even as they move toward becoming citizens of the United States. According to the a scholar, immigrants should maintain the languages, skills, religions, customs and arts of their own heritage, even while they are working towards entering the mainstream of the new country. The immigrants bring their native cultural, political, and social patterns and attitudes, varied academic and religious backgrounds, as well as their ethnic arts, sports, holidays, festivals, and foods. They have greatly enriched the life of that country. As a matter of fact, although there are frequent conflicts between the cultures they have brought with them from the "old country" and those found in America, most immigrants learn to adjust to and love their adopted land.

But it doesn’t mean that the immigrants are free to maintain their cultural and religious practices while they are in new country. They have to obey the law of that country. If the country definitely prohibits that kind of behavior by law, I think the immigrants should obey the law as civics. My view on university teachers

Are there any differences between university teachers and the teachers in primary and middle school? Let me think. While I was still a child, I remember the teachers always force us to do what they told us to. If we can’t finish them on time, what we got was nothing but a punishment. And I was told that the university teachers are totally different from the primary and middle school. They said we would gain lots of liberty from the university teachers. The atmosphere of studying would be more casual. As a matter of fact, they are not strict as the teachers before. At the same time, it makes me realize the definition of teacher. Their job is to help students to learn, not force. Consciousness is very important to the study.

What’s more,I think interest plays an important role while we are learning something. As far as I am concerned, excellent are the teachers who are leading the students to develop an interest in the subject they touch. As a university teacher, some of them have done an excellent job. Monica is one of my teachers who interest me in what I had to learn. At first, I was attracted by her excellent oral English. Her voice is a melody. When she explains the texts, she expresses much in few words; clear and succinct. I appreciate this very much. So though she spoke a little fast, but I’d like to concentrate on what she said. They’re still doing the great job while some others are still far away from them. It doesn’t mean that they are lack of knowledge. But the problem is just about the way they teach. Sometimes, we really feel dull in class; there is no fun, no passion. It seems there are no communication between the teachers and students. The one that making a speech on the platform is completely enchanted by what he said. Because of the liberty of speech, some of the teachers behave extremely.

It’s said that the teachers who is not employable would definitely be fired. I think teachers are the guide of study. As a university teacher, his or her duty is not only to teach the knowledge from the text book, but also the love, the depths and the limitations of human nature. “Maybe the students will forget what they have learned in class, but probably not forget the verity of life which the teacher ever talked about” Said one of the university teachers.

Real-name system, worse than a junk-mail?

To the Editor:
Regarding the article “Oversight VS privacy”(Page 4,opinion,Dec 1, China daily)
Get closed to the debate "To be anonymous or not on the internet", I don’t oppose the proper management. But that’s indeed a serous problem of how to protect our privacy; I received a junk-mail a month ago, maybe there was something wrong with my mailbox, or perhaps the criminals have got a new way to escape the junk-mail rejecting system, I received the letter normally. What he said in the letter was nothing but about giving a hint to write back with real information of the reader. The criminals definitely will commit ASA they get these.

What I’m trying to say is that some criminal hackers will steal our real information in all kinds of unimagined ways. Won’t it be more convenient with them if we put our real information on line? It’s more reasonable to ensure the security of our information first, then the real-name identity system. Cecilia Leung

Maldives Islands--A Heaven to take a deep breath with ocean

There are many places I want to travel, internal like Great Wall, the old town of Lijiang, the Huangshan of Anhui etc; abroad I’d like to visit Milan, Japan, Cambodia etc. but the favourite place I want to travel is Maldives Islands. Here I will talk something about it.

The Maldives; the name alone conjures up images of romance, sunny skies and an abundance of underwater life where soft corals sway in gentle warm tropical currents.

From the pictures I searched from the internet, it‘s not hard to find it fabulous. The water around the island is so blue, sometimes green. There’s lots of sunshine. We even can see the bottom of the sea through the water. The water of Maldives sometimes is calm as a mirror and sometimes vivid as a child. It will dance following the tempo of the breeze. Thanks to the wind and refraction, it seems that the wave glitters with gold. The sand on the island is white. The first image it left me is pure. It must be a heaven of the world.

From the very early times, Maldives Islands were famous for two products, the money cowrie Cyprea Moneta and Maldives fish. And here I’d like talk something about the Maldives fish because I think it’s delicious. It was produced by boiling, smoking, curing and drying tuna to yield a nutritious, ebony-colored and textured fillet. It was said to be an ideal source of protein for carrying on long sea voyages and its rarity made it a prized delicacy in most of the Indian subcontinent, where it is a major ingredient in many dishes.

The Sports and Activities there is attractive as well. They are listed as follow, astronomy, badminton, ‘Bai Bala’, basketball beach volleyball, big game fishing, billiards, chess, carom, cricket, darts, dive schools, wreck dives, parasailing, photography, sailing, scuba diving and snorkeling, soccer, surfing, table-tennis, tennis, traditional performances, bodu beru, windsurfing, waterskiing, jet skiing.

There are many things I want to do on this island. First of all, I’d like to participate in the Scuba Diving and Snorkeling. The Maldives rank amongst the best snorkeling and diving destinations in the world. It would be a wonderful time to get close to the pure water. By then, we can swim with manta rays, sharks, and turtles, drift effortlessly with the current or explore historical shipwrecks. Another thing is to parasail; I never fly in the sky. It must be an exciting experience to float in the air.

But it is said that the island is sinking. Oh Jesus! A heaven is disappearing. I hope that I can visit there before it sinks. It will be great if I can honeymoon there with MR. RIGHT.
