Lydia aka Shum Din-Ha
(1945-2008)

Veteran Hong Kong actress Shen Dianxia, also known as Lydia, died Tuesday morning(Feb.19 2008) in Hong Kong, Taiwan media outlet TVBS reports.


Lydia Shum Din-Ha, known as Fei-fei, or Fatty, and one of Hong Kong's most popular comedian actresses, died of liver tumor and other complications on Tuesday morning in a hospital in Hong Kong.

Local channel Cable TV News said in a report she died of liver tumor in Queen Mary Hospital. Shum, also known as Lydia Sum, was 62 years old.

Shum was born in July, 1945 into a well-off large family in Shanghai and ranked the sixth among the family's nine children. She made her film debut in 1960, joined the Hong Kong-based Shaw Brothers, a famous film company, as a child actress and rose to stardom with the free-to-air television broadcaster TVB's variety show Enjoy Yourself Tonight, which was hugely popular in Hong Kong for over 20 years. With her signature smile, dark-rimmed glasses and comic hairstyle, Shum established herself as a comic and dramatic actress.

Shum married Hong Kong actor and singer Adam Cheng Siu-chow in 1985 after they lived together for 10 years. The two split up in 1987, only eight months after their daughter and only child Joyce was born.

Shum, dogged by numerous health problems, including chronic ailments such as cholangitis, diabetes and hypertension, was lately admitted to hospitals repeatedly. She was diagnosed with liver tumor and cancer around the gallbladder in 2006 and was discharged from hospital in July 2007 after an operation to remove a third of her liver. But she collapsed at home and was rushed to hospital in October.

沈殿霞1947年7月出生于上海的一个富裕家庭。她在家里的九姐弟中排行老六。1960年以儿童演员身份入行，加入香港著名的邵氏兄弟电影公司。她曾主持香港无线电视台的王牌节目《欢乐今宵》长达20年之久。凭借招牌微笑，黑边眼镜以及猫头鹰式的喜剧发式，沈殿霞树立起了自己在演艺圈的地位。1985年，沈殿霞和郑少秋结束了10年的同居生活，正式结为夫妻。但1987年，二人在他们唯一的女儿欣宜出生8个月后，宣告分手。

沈殿霞生前被胆管炎，糖尿病和高血压等诸多疾患困扰，期间反复入院。2006年她被诊断为肝脏肿瘤和胆管癌。07年7月她接受了1/3肝脏切除术后出院。但同年10月，她因在家昏倒而紧急入院。



I heared of the news yesterday, one day after she left. I was reading the news on Tencent QQ window and suddenly I found a title named "the funeral of Shum Din-Ha will be held in three days". When I read it, I was a kinda shocked. I heard she was badly ill but I just couldn't believe that the day finally came. I felt so sad and couldn't help sobbing as soon as I was sure of the news. I'm so sorry to her death.

She's one of my favorite artists cuz she was very hilarious and always made me and my family laugh happily on the screen. It has been many years since I watched her shows. Her sense of humor impressed me when I was still little.

I watched a TV show which the TVB made to mourn for her. I was crying through viewing it. From her colleagues, I learned that she was a gifted TV host, an excellent and professional actress, a positive individual, a tenacious soldier, a trusted friend and a great mother.

There were some clips about her whole actress life in the show. And there was a sentence she said impressed me most. "Try to do everything more than perfect cuz though sometimes we are not in the right mood, we still can make it perfect."

On her way of fighting against the cancer, I remembered her words when she was awarded on a show. "I won't give up my favourite career as a actress, as I won't give my life up!" She left eventually, but her spirit will always be there.

The thing that she most worried about when alive was the future of her daughter Joyce. She played roles of mummy and daddy in Joyce's childhood. Though grew up from a broken family, Joyce still could get great love from her mother. I remembered in my childhood, I always saw the little cutie singing on the stage with her mom.
From the relevant vid, we know Lydia made a new year wish no long ago, she wished Joyce would be loved by everyone since she left. It will. Fei-fei, rest in peace, you will always live in our hearts!
