The explosion time was 15 minutes and 42 seconds. The location was Texas.
Columbia was originally meant to take 100 flights however her 20th flight was her last. The mission was 16 day long and was called STS-107 mission.

The onboard crew comprised of seven people...
1). Ilan Ramon, first Israeli to enter space, was on his first space flight.
2). Commander Rick Husband, former NASA test pilot.
3). William Mc Cool, shuttle pilot, on his first space flight.
4). Us. Navy Captain, David Brown, A naval aviator and flight surgeon on his first space flight.
5). Michael Anderson, former instructor pilot.
6). Kalpana Chawla, flight instructor and the most experienced astronaut on the mission.
7). Laurel Clark, US Navy commander and naval surgeon selected by NASA on her first space flight.
What did people observe from the land?
•Rumbling sounds
•Fog
•Trails of smoke zig- zagging across the sky
•Debris
•Flashes of light
•Stuff coming out of the shuttle
Theories of accident
Theory 1.
The failure of heat resistance system could have caused the disintegration of space shuttle Columbia as it re-entered the earth’s atmosphere. This theory was suggested by Heinz Hermann Koelle, a German space expert who believes that re-entry is one of the most dangerous moments in the space a sudden slowing down of the shuttle from 28,000 Km to 1,100 Km causes enormous amount of heat.
Theory 2.
The Iraqis claim that it was God’s vengeance as US was involved in aggression against them in the war against terrorism and Ilan Ramond were among the pilots who bombed Iraqi nuclear reactor in 1981.
Theory 3.
Russian Scientist say that the craft was very old and had many space journeys.
General Space Shuttle landing process
•Takes an hour from leaving earths orbit to touch down.
•Enters the atmosphere at an altitude of above 130Km some 8000Km from its landing strip.
•Enters the atmosphere at a 40 degree angle to the horizon with its wings level.
•At the position the shuttle heat shield protects it from a temperature up to 1650 centigrade.
