Why I choose the Opera browser

About ten years ago, a friend showed me Opera. It was so much better than anything else at the time that I switched immediately.

I am an avid proponent of Free/Libre Open-Source Software (FLOSS), but I am also a free-marketeer. FLOSS outperforms the competition almost invariably because FLOSS authors trade in their reputation and commitment rather than primarily pecuniary considerations. Their gain is foremost in their reputation rather than their pocketbook. Yet, I believe in rewarding and supporting excellence in software, wherever it is found.

I soon sent in my $35 for a registered copy, the first non-FLOSS I had paid for in about ten years--usually I donate to FLOSS authors. New Opera releases with new features continued to delight me--the integration of a mail agent, built-in searches, user defined seaches. The release of the M2 integrated mail agent blew me away. The change to free distribution astonished me.

Nevertheless, I don't regret supporting Opera; it is still the best $35 I ever spent.
