Rove says Palin excitement will subside, that Palin not most qualified candidate
Thursday, September 18, 2008 5:33:56 PM
While Rove questions Obama's ability to lead ~ he was the brains behind George Bush's election (and look at the state of the economy now) ~ someone who when elected could hardly string a sentence together and was far less articulate, informed and intellectually curious than Obama ~ both graduating from the same University ~ Obama worked at State Senate level before becoming a Senator, in law and taught Constitutional Law at University ~ a subject Rove might have found a little difficult at times ~ to come to terms with.ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Republican tactician Karl Rove said Wednesday that Sen. John McCain's vice presidential pick was a political choice and that excitement over Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will subside.
"Nothing lasts for 60-some-odd days," Rove told The Associated Press after appearing at a health care conference. "Will she be the center of attention in the remaining 48 days? No, but she came on in a very powerful way and has given a sense of urgency to the McCain campaign that's pretty remarkable."
Rove said Palin was a "political pick" just as Sen. Barack Obama's choice of Delaware Sen. Joseph Biden was, and that she is not the most qualified candidate. Biden, well-versed in foreign policy issues after more than three decades in the Senate, makes up for the Illinois senator's lack of experience in that area. Palin has been governor for less than two years, and was mayor of small-town Wasilla before that.
But Rove said he had no qualms about her ability to lead.
The real question, he said, is whether the presidential candidates are qualified "and frankly, the answer to that is I think the American people have deep and persistent doubts about the readiness of this dynamic and charismatic first-term senator from Illinois."
The former political adviser to President Bush also noted changes in McCain's demeanor since he last sought the White House in 2000.
"He was a little bit of a hothead in 2000. He held a grudge and I think the passage of time has caused him to sort of say, 'You know what? Life is short and I'm going to be focused on doing what I think is right and not hold grudges or be angry about things,'" Rove said. "He was angry after the 2000 election."
Rove also reiterated earlier criticism of television ads by both campaigns that he said crossed the line.
He said Obama is an "arrogant dilettante" but still offered the Democratic nominee some advice: "The way that Obama can win is by explaining, expounding on who he is."

Karl Rove Says Woe! McCain's Ads Have Gone Too Far
Sunday, September 14, 2008 9:10:04 PM

A lovely little piece - Karl Rove agrees McCain's ads over the top - even by his standards - question is will McCain back down - he probably forgot what truth was dealing with Sarah Palin - birds of a feather there - between McCain throwing out the random war story, or feels the need to express his deep religious feeling each time - he hits a hard question - we can be sure the truth is in there somewhere - but it ain't coming out today!!
When Karl Rove is saying your political ads have gone too far, you know you must be doing something dishonest.
The former Bush chief strategist, appearing on Fox News Sunday, said that John McCain had stretched the truth in his recent round of attacks against Barack Obama, in the process opening up the Arizonan to a round of effective counter-attacks.
"McCain has gone in his ads one step too far, and sort of attributing to Obama things that are, you know, beyond the 100-percent-truth test," said Rove. "Both campaigns ought to be careful about... there ought to be an adult who says: 'Do we really need to go that far in this ad? Don't we make our point and get broader acceptance and deny the opposition an opportunity to attack us if we don't include that one little last tweak in the ad?'"
Watch:
McCain has received a heaping dose of criticism late this week for launching a series of advertisements that could be categorized as dishonest if not downright lies. The Obama camp, in a memo to reporters Sunday morning -- entitled a "Dishonorable, Dishonest Campaign" -- highlighted a number of these pieces. Joe Klein, of Time magazine called one spot the "sleaziest" he had ever seen. Paul Krugman of the New York Times, defined the episode as a "blizzard of lies." On Sunday, the St. Petersburg Times, ran an editorial entitled: "Campaign Of Lies Disgraces McCain," while the Chicago Tribune's Steve Chapman, wrote that "to McCain the truth is expandable."
That Rove would acknowledge truth in these complaints is somewhat remarkable. The man known as Bush's brain made a reputation of slinging mud at the opposition and waiting for it to stick.
But it should be noted, Rove's complaints with McCain's strategy was not that it had elicited the condemnation of groups like politifact or factcheck.org -- "You can't trust the fact check organization in all respect," he said. "They are human beings and individuals; they have got their own biases in there." Rather, he argued that by exaggerating so wildly, the Republican presidential nominee had opened himself up to political attacks.
"They don't need to attack each other in this way," he said. "They have legitimate points to make about each other."
UPDATE: Sure enough, the Obama campaign weighs in... gleefully.
"In case anyone was still wondering whether John McCain is running the sleaziest, most dishonest campaign in history, today Karl Rove - the man who held the previous record - said McCain's ads have gone too far," said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor.

Biden reacts eloquently to Rove insult
Tuesday, September 2, 2008 12:30:01 PM
Rove must be mighty mad - at all the unwanted attention - Maverick McCain's selection for VP - has left him to - get cleanin' up on - it's all he could do is to hurl verbal insults at Barrack's pristine VP choice Biden.Sens. Biden and Obama campaigned together in Michigan Sunday.
(CNN) – If Sen. Joe Biden was hurt that Republican operative Karl Rove called him a “big blowhard doofus” at an event in Minneapolis Monday, he didn’t show it.
On hearing the news, Biden grinned and said “he’s a great American.”
The blog Politicker ME reports that at a Maine delegate breakfast at the Republican National Convention, Rove, the so-called “architect” of the Bush administration, called Biden a “big blowhard doofus.” Biden, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, is notoriuos in Washington for being talkative at Senate hearings.
Later, in response to a different question, Rove is reported to have asked "Is there press in this room?"
Biden addressed the criticism during a flight on his campaign plane Monday evening. A reporter asked if the senator would now answer to “Senator Doofus.”
“You can call me anything you want,” he said. “I learned a long time ago you can call me anything you want.”
Both political parties have made a point in recent days to draw down partisan rhetoric as Hurricane Gustav threatened the Gulf Coast. Biden said he would have no trouble drawing his sword in the weeks to come.
“I don’t think we’ll have any trouble resuming the campaign,” he said. “I guess Karl did it already. I guess he didn’t get the memo.”
Biden’s campaign spokesman quickly released a statement rebuking Rove for the comments.
“It’s more than a little sad that with another hurricane heading for the Gulf Coast, Karl Rove is up to the same old attack politics that he practically patented while helping dig a deep hole for our country to get out of,” said Biden Spokesman David Wade. “Americans deserve better, especially at a time like this.”

Rove Loses Cool At RNC Calls Biden A "Big, Blowhard Doofus"
Tuesday, September 2, 2008 10:46:52 AM
One minute Rove says the Dems shouldn't bring up the inexperience argument - but then he does - even though with concerns about McCain's age and health - Palin could - like Anna Nicole Smith find herself at the head of his party - with little or no real experience. Palin was mayor and manager of Wasilla - a mostly ceremonial role.Check out their municipal code:
1. Preside at council meetings. The mayor may take part in the discussion of matters before the council, but may not vote, except that the mayor may vote in the case of a tie;
2. Act as ceremonial head of the city;
I guess the "big, blowhard doofus" title for Biden Karl's best school yard antitics - is meant to act like 'flipflopper' did on Kerry ?? But may I add Biden's got a winning smile - that lights you up inside !!
Politicker ME reports:
Maine's Republican delegation got a surprise visit from former White House political operative Karl Rove at its convention breakfast this morning.
During his speech, he talked up John McCain's Republican presidential bid and criticized Democratic nominee Barack Obama for his inexperience.
When the topic of running mates came up, he referred to U.S. Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) as a "big, blowhard doofus."

Why Palin? McCain v. Rove
Monday, September 1, 2008 7:03:07 PM
Does the McCain choice for VP reflect his sense of social confinement – as a young person he always had access to power by way of his father's position – but lacked the financial backing to fully realize this - likely one of the reasons he - as a serial adulterer - settled on little Cindy McCain for a wife. And why he would rebel against the rational counsel - and proven election winner - Karl Rove – by picking Sarah Palin.
Why did John McCain select Sarah Palin as his running mate? The real reason is that he made an impulsive decision to prove his independence in reaction to pressure from Karl Rove, who was lobbying for Mitt Romney, as I explain in a forum on Firedoglake.com on my new book, The Strange Death of Republican America: Chronicles of a Collapsing Party.
I explain the inside story, according to sources close to the McCain campaign:
On Palin: My information is that Karl Rove wanted Romney and pushed him. McCain pushed back. He really wanted Lieberman. That was completely out of the question. Palin is the result. One element of the Palin nomination is McCain establishing himself apart from the Bush/Rove political operation, even as his campaign manager, Steve Schmidt, is one of their creatures. From the outside, it's often hard to figure out how vicious and divided the Republicans can be with each other.
I further explain that McCain rationalized his hasty choice as an appeal to the Republican base:
On McCain and the GOP base: Conventions are real tests of party unity, as we've just seen with the Democrats. McCain still has to pass the test through his own convention. Palin, among other things, enables him to bring along the social conservatives, or it ought to do so. Once McCain receives the nomination he is freer to move to the center. He is already campaigning more as a "maverick" and behind the scenes he is in some conflict with both Bush and Rove on policy and politics. If we had a sensate political press corps they might report on these abrasions.
McCain's emergence as the GOP nominee represents the fracturing of the conservative Republican dominance of the party, shattered as a consequence of George W. Bush's radicalism. I explain the story of how the Republicans came apart in "The Strange Death of Republican America." On the ruins, McCain must attempt to piece together the broken shards. In McCain's case, the political motive has combined with the temperamental. Thus, Sarah Palin.
