The Aimless Wanderings of a Demented Mind.

J. C. Penny

I was tooling around on the OC today and while reading comments on a friends blog, L2D2, the subject of Woolworth's came up.

I remember Woolworth's as being a five and dime store when I was a young'un. There was one in downtown Hot Springs, Arkansas on Central Avenue. I believe it was somewhere between the Paramount Theater and The Southern Club. What I remember most about it is probably the smell of walking in to that store. They had one of the "nuts counters" where cashews and other roasted nuts could be purchased by weight. The nuts were in a display case and had a heat lamp on them which kept them warm and the aroma filled the store, at least it does in my memory. I also remember that the store had a lunch counter near the entrance. It was one of my favorite stores to look around in as a child. They always had such neat stuff.

Anyway, thinking of that reminded me of the old J.C. Penny store that was located within a couple of blocks of that store. This brought something else to my mind.

While I was in Wyoming last year I took the opportunity to visit Kemmerer, Wyoming. Home of the J. C. Penny mother store. This store is laid out very close to how I remember both the Hot Springs and Arkadelphia stores from when I was a child.

I just thought I would share the three photos that I took of that store, when I visited it, with my OC friends.

Wow, that's pretty cool. Historic downtowns are interesting. My son lives in Bentonville, and I had the chance to see the Walton's Five and Dime on the Bentonville Town Square, where Wal-Mart had its humble beginnings. The store is still there, although it's more a museum now.

Mega-stores just aren't as much fun as those little stores used to be.
