Education
How do we learn?
We learn with our senses. Our 5 senses provide doors or pathways to learning.
This may be a useful generalization, but it may be limiting too. There are a lot of different
ways to Know something (see Hume) and not everything can possibly come in via the five senses. Do we have more than five senses? Not according to most physiologists.
For instance, I know somewhat about printing through some work experience. I know about
dots and primary v. process colors, etc. So, this is experience gained through the senses.
But I've also read about these processes and techniques. So, is this exzperience -- is it sense-knowledge, muscle-memory or some other kind? Dunno. What would you call it?
I do think of myself as a visual learner: In the VAK scale, I like to lo ok at things to figure them
out. "I see" is part of my vernacular. Optics is a treat, and we're all invited, minus the blind
and those who won't see. What are you looking at right now? Are you thinking of how you can
improv e it? Or how beautiful it is? What in the world are you looking at? A printing? a painting?
a sculpture? computer screen? a map? the window? a table? Chances are, it's lit and light
is something we all can't live without. Am I wrong? Sure, water persis ts but light? Light is
light. Pa rticle or wave? What's the world ready for now? Are you delivering it?
Some will say that the purpose of education is to ask the right questions. I say the purpose of asking the right questions is to get an education. ee
