How to enable power-saving on nvidia GPUs (on Linux or BSD)

, , ,

This short post just explains how you can enable PowerMizer and performance tuning for nvidia proprietary drivers under Linux (and also BSD).

Basically, just add this line to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
Option "RegistryDwords" "PowerMizerEnable=0x1; PerfLevelSrc=0x2233; PowerMizerDefault=0x3"

It will set adaptive strategy mode (raise the GPU clock as needed, lower it when not needed) whenever the machine is powered by AC; and will set maximum power saving mode (keep the lowest GPU clock possible) whendever the machine is powered by battery.

You can monitor the GPU clock and temperature using nvidia-settings program. Note, however, that it might report an incorrect Performance mode, so just ignore this value (and keep an eye at the clock and the thermal monitor).

Since I use Compiz, I expect that this feature will drastically reduce energy consumption of my notebook, extending the battery runtime.

All credit goes to NVIDIA™ driver for FreeBSD/Linux: performance and power saving hints, which contains a very detailed explanation of this almost undocumented feature.

Wi-Fi with Master Mode! Finally!

, , ,

Woohoo! Finally I could get my ralink card work in Master mode! My previous attempt was about 2 months ago.

It seems to work, but now it's almost 4:00 AM and I haven't had enough time to really test it. But my notebook can see and connect to my desktop-working-as-access-point, and I need to document this victory!

Trying to set up Access Point with RaLink rt61pci

, , ,

As you may know, I've previously tried to make my desktop Wi-Fi card to work as an Access Point. [1] [2] [3] [4] After all those tries, I had given up and set up the ad-hoc mode. However, I still want to set it up as an access point, and yesterday I tried again.

Unfortunately, it didn't work...

iwl3945: Microcode HW error detected.

This post is just to document an error I've just had. Since it is the very first time it occurs, I suppose it might be just a "random", non-reproducible, hardware error.

Note, however, that I've not solved my previous issue with nvidia-drivers yet. I'm still looking for help about that. Update: If found an workaround for my previous issue: use Compiz instead of Beryl. I don't feel it is "solved", but this workaround appears to work for me.

BandLuxe C120 3G Modem, from Oi Velox Plug

, , , ...

I bought a BandRich BandLuxe C120 HSDPA USB modem from Oi brazillian company. It was part of Oi Velox Plug or Oi 3GG (because the 3G from Oi is more than 3G, it is 3GG! - bah, marketing bullshit).

Supposedly, this modem was supported on Linux. At least this is what the box said. The truth... well... I bet you can imagine.
