Bosnian Folk Song

, , ,

The platter she is spinning is a “tepsija” translated as baking sheet in which they make the delicious pita and burek. Traditionally, the singer kneels and sings into the tepsija which creates a very interesting sound, the song making a kind of wa wa sound.

(Burek is a pie made of filo dough, stuffed with either ground meat or cheese. Greasy but delicious.)

this is a beautiful and unusual video!!
the small ground table that looks like a cocktail table was very common in Greece too! We used to call it :sofra" I believe it is a Turkish word and we used to play our backgammon game on it! (we still have it hanging in our dining room in Greece as a conversation piece! ) thanks for the memories ... this wish for Naomi and friends:

Ah... thank you, Angeliki. flirt

I agree that it's really unusual, definitely sounds Turkish/middle-eastern in tonalities. I need to ask a Bosnian friend of mine to look at it & tell me what it is. It's really interesting how all of the cultures cross over, isn't it?

"the cultures cross over, isn't it?"
It is
very true Naomi,
if we just open our hearts and minds and see it this way our world will be so much more peaceful!
Cultures united, lets hope people will do too!!!!
Will you please ask this lady how they call "sofra" in Bosnia too??

p.s. in many small Greek villages women still use it to open filo to make pies

Also in small Turkish villages it still serves as a family gathering for dinner in the back yard under the grape vine trees

Thanks Naomi. Well worth the small wait. And I think that girl MUST have silly putty on her hand or something!

Incidently, somebody came along some time ago and left a link on one of my blog posts to get the Savior soundtrack, which I reproduce here for anybody who likes the Balkan music. "Rasti Rasti" is particularly haunting.

Nice work.

@Angeliki

Here is the answer from my Bosnian friend:

"In Bosnian it is also called sofra. It was used for family meals a few centuries back-brought to Bosnia by the occupation by Turkey, I believe."

VERY cool for me to learn all of this!

@ Darko,
it is amazing what we learn by growing in our countries of origin .
I was talking to a Greek raised in the US and he had that chip on his shoulder saying "I grew up with the same customs I understand from where you are coming from!".
Well when I was talking about having no electricity after 9pm (the village had a battery operate system, and we had to continue our homework with an oil lamp,
or when I told him that at the village my dad was serving we had no indoor plumbing,
the response was: "these things are not happening in this century".
Ha! I am certain they are some remote places in our countries that they still like that!
What I am saying is , unless you grow up in a country you can never know or adopt all!
Many stories to share ! Somebody stop me!!

You are absolutely right Angeliki, I know some places like this as well in central and southern Serbia.
