Give me my Loop back!

, , ,

I had recently heard rumblings of increased crime in the U. City Loop. A teenager was shot during an argument back in August. A store that stocks very expensive jeans had recently been held up. It worried & angered me, but I didn't really think that much. I've been having plenty of anxiety over who we're about to elect as our new president, trying to get a web site off the ground in a bad economy, hearing about health problems of various friends, etc.

Friday night, my husband and I went to our beloved Tivoli Theater in the Loop to see "Rachel Getting Married." We left the theater at about 9:30, walked back to our car, & hit our favorite Mexican restaurant before going home.

Last night (Saturday night) we went to have dinner with some friends in front of a St. Louis institution, Blueberry Hill. Our friend mentioned there had been a police officer shot & killed Friday night in the Loop. We talked about it & then went back to discussing various things, particularly politics, as the husband of this couple & I are both political junkies. Then we went home.

I woke up this morning & turned on the Today Show. They broke for a local news update. I actually listened for once as I wanted to know more about the murder of the police officer.

It turns out he was a friend of mine. His name was Mike King. I hadn't seen him for years, I just hadn't run into him. I first met him around 10 years ago when I was the neighborhood liaison to the police department for updating the neighborhood on crime in our area. I think he also may have helped me out when we had major problems with some neighbors that finally moved away.

Mike was a great guy. He was really sweet & friendly. He didn't have that hard outer exterior that many cops (understandably) have.

Mike was murdered Friday night for no reason at all. He was sitting in his police car right in front of Starbucks, right where we had walked 30 minutes prior to get back to our car. We may have even walked past his patrol car & not even noticed him because there is always a police car parked in that spot.

The scum who killed him was a convicted drug dealer, apparently well-known by the police department. He just walked up to Mike's car & shot & killed him. They're still looking for the bastard as of this writing.

I can't even begin to express the sadness & anger I am feeling right now. For Mike's wife, for Mike's family & friends, for the U. City Police Department, for my community, for myself. Mike was only 50.

The Loop is where I go to relax and feel grounded. When I need to get myself away from work (since I work at home) I go to the library where I first learned how to read at the triangle table. I used to get my new shoes at the beginning of each school year at Lasky's, which was a mainstay of the area for years. The guys at the produce market know they can expect to see me almost every week. I've been going to the Tivoli theater since I can't even remember. Back when the floors were perpetually sticky, the a/c & heating were undependable, & I watched double features of almost every cult classic that was made in the early 80's.

This is where I most feel like me. Where I go when I feel lost & need to find my footing. This is where I go, above all, to feel safe.

And now thugs have taken over my neighborhood.

UPDATE-NOV. 4-
I just saw that they've caught Mike's killer. Thank God. A small amount of justice on the day of Mike's funeral should give everyone a small amount of peace.

I very much appreciate you sharing this.

Naomi 2. November 2008, 16:00

I had to do something. I feel helpless & incredibly angry & sad.

PainterWoman 2. November 2008, 16:14

Very sad. A couple years back, we had an incident where a cop stopped a car for a routine traffic violation. As soon as he walked up to the car, he was shot and killed. Then the car took off but there were witnesses because the incident happened in a neighborhood and people were looking out there windows or standing in their yard. The killer was soon apprehended.

Then just recently, we had a cop killed by a drunk driver who t-boned his patrol car. The cop left behind a wife and baby.

There have been several others killed in the last couple of years.

Naomi 2. November 2008, 16:18

Guns and drugs. Without them, we'd be much better off.

Angeliki 2. November 2008, 18:24

:frown: heart breaking story .........

Naomi 2. November 2008, 22:51

Very. We're trying to make sense of it but of course we can't.

Angeliki 3. November 2008, 00:31

I feel every time I loose a friend the period of time that I lived with his/her presence stops being a time that it can be remembered for happiness ..
only can be remembered for respect and honoring...

Naomi 3. November 2008, 03:21

True.

Matthew 3. November 2008, 04:02

I'm really sorry about your loss, Naomi. Mike, especially, but also your peace. :frown:

Naomi 3. November 2008, 13:12

Thanks. We're feeling pretty traumatized right now & are trying to figure out how to cope with this. I may go to his funeral tomorrow to be around other people who are grieving. It's the violence that we can't accept.

Matthew 3. November 2008, 13:16

Loss by violence is so difficult. It's unexpected, and preventable (or at least unnecessary). We never find whys where they don't exist.

Naomi 3. November 2008, 13:35

I just don't know how to deal with this. Jeff thinks we might feel a little better once they find the bastard who did this. I hope that happens very soon for everyone's safety & sense of closure. We have the death penalty here, so I am pretty sure he'll be sentences to death.

Angeliki 3. November 2008, 16:17

I am extremely sorry to see such a disrespect to a dead officer,
it is sad :frown:

Naomi,
It takes time to mourn for the loss a friend,
it takes a life time to mourn for a family member ,
you have to step back and realize in a life of duty danger is every where .
Policemen , Firemen ,plus their families are very aware of it.
Not easy to deal with, but still part of life :frown:

Matthew 3. November 2008, 17:23

As we all know, you don't have to be white to be a racist, you don't have to be a fundamentalist to be a terrorist (yes, I think that website qualifies as terrorism), and you don't have to be uneducated to be stupid.

Luckily, none of those things preclude you from being caring, respectuful, bright, and loving of your fellow; without respect for color of skin, level of schooling, God or any of the other artificial boundaries we place on each other.

Naomi 3. November 2008, 18:46

This isn't simply disrespect-this is dangerous,venomous hate!

Word Press is responsible for hosting this content, which according to their policy is not acceptable on their site.

Angeliki 3. November 2008, 18:53

Racism its obviously a subject that we always throw under the rug... Maybe with the next Administration
we will face the issue and
make our own history of seeing no color....
I am just hopping .....
I am not confident it will happen.
I also have to see things from both sides and
I am sure the other side of the hate river,
doesn't feel great about the racism that faces for centuries either :frown:
Our own parents and grandparents create it and we are all responsible for it :frown:

Matthew 3. November 2008, 19:04

I would complain to Wordpress, Naomi.

I would only say this about the vile, contemptible ramblings posted on that blog: it reminds me very much of the kind of racist hatred I've seen from Aryan Nation and other skinhead type folks. Completely misguided and wrong headed, and ultimately very damaging.

The difference (not the excuse) is that the folks in white supremecist organizations don't have a long history of subjugation.

Naomi 3. November 2008, 19:15

Trust me, someone with a lot more authority than me is dealing with Word Press.

I totally agree with you. They do sound like skin heads. It's very scary & very much makes me fear for Obama if he's elected.

Matthew 3. November 2008, 20:22

It's all about authority. You don't even have to be white to be racist, in their view - just a cop.

Naomi 3. November 2008, 20:36

Who knows. Apparently the killer is up in Nebraska by this point. Only he can tell us why the hell he did something so evil.

Angeliki 3. November 2008, 21:15

if he is able to have a clear thinking...Murderers usually don't :frown:

Naomi 3. November 2008, 22:39

I'm sure he's insane (and jacked up on drugs), but I'm guessing he knows why he did it. It was clearly pre-meditated as he had a car waiting which sped away & therefore had an accomplice.

Angeliki 3. November 2008, 22:44

:frown:
I hope justice will be served ...
drugs can do that to a person,
I was just at Ed's post (a great post as always) and the subject is on drugs...
I hope you feel better Naomi,
I really do

Matthew 4. November 2008, 03:45

Even if he knows, he's unlikely to ever tell. Even if he tells, it's not likely to be an explanation that is satifactory.

Edward Piercy 7. November 2008, 21:29

I'm glad they caught the bastard.

@ Angeliki. I did a post on drugs? Funny, I can't remember that one. Must be the drugs I'm on.

Naomi 8. November 2008, 15:59

So am I. I looked at the clock at about 9:00 last night & thought that a week ago, Mike had only about another hour to live. It's horrible.

Angeliki 8. November 2008, 17:39

Ed,
I am glad you found it funny :D

Sad to hear about the resurgence of crime in the Loop.

Naomi 11. November 2008, 16:07

That's right, didn't you meet Richard for coffee there?

It's seems to be city-wide. There have been numerous murders in the past week, which is much higher than the St. Louis norm.

Higher crime was predicted with the sinking economy, but this is ridiculous!

yooperprof 12. November 2008, 02:56

Yes, that's where we met - and one night I was in town there were some nice young people playing jazz out on the pavement in front.

Naomi 12. November 2008, 03:51

There are still plenty of people hanging out, walking dogs, playing music, etc. But there have been 3 shootings in the Loop since some time in August. It's insane.

Matthew 12. November 2008, 04:14

We had a summer where there was a shooting in Bloomington every week for eight weeks. We get a shooting or two a year, so that was some crazy time.

I hope bad things come in threes, and that U City is done with awfulness for a while.

Naomi 12. November 2008, 13:22

Thanks, me too.

I can't believe Bloomington became that violent.

I imagine the sheer emotional stress the economy is placing on individuals & their families will make people do some very psycho things in the future.
