Please welcome a new Opera member

, , , ,

I met and interviewed Laura this morning. She is not only a very cool person but is a phenomenal & WAY under-appreciated photographer. Please welcome her to Opera with open arms & help get the word out about her amazing photos. By the way, Laura just started snapping pics a few years ago & is an untrained photographer. :eyes:

@Laura, you're welcome. I just can't get over your photos.

@ Matt. You know, I was thinking about getting one of those pink ones like the Mary Kay ladies drive.

Oh yea, thanks for the reminder. I kind of forgot about the tag line issue.

The longer I run this site, the more I realize how much I do things in too many bits and pieces as there is only one of me & too much to be done. Jeff will be out of school in 3 weeks & then I hope to be able to get things under control a bit more.

Trust me, he's doing the work on the house out of boredom. Teachers, just like kids, get bored over the summer. And he'll love hanging with his buddy who will be helping him.

Now,I did just tell the poor boy that I need help getting caught up with the site when he gets out of school. For that, he is an .

too many bits and pieces

I have conflicting bits of unslicited advice:
  • There is a lot to be said for project management (and a business plan that informs your actions).
  • The guys who make a living telling the rest of us how to get things done tend to suggest that you do little things when they come up - if you put little things off, they just pile up. If you do them now, they are out of the way. Prioritize the big things.

By noah counte, # 11. May 2008, 00:10:11

avatar
Yup, I always take care of the small stuff quickly. That's why I'm known for fast follow-up.

Business plan? Not there yet. I have a to-do list. The site isn't developed enough for me to create a business plan.

By CultureSurfer, # 11. May 2008, 01:05:15

avatar
I completely understand. I don't mean to harp...

Perhaps a project plan? Something has to inform development, doesn't it?

By noah counte, # 11. May 2008, 01:53:08

avatar
Intuition. That's all I need. The clincher is making sure I listen to it.

By CultureSurfer, # 11. May 2008, 15:23:33

avatar
You're the boss!

Listening to your intuition is always a good idea. Always.

*I_ArtMan cuts and pastes matthew's practical advice. i like that line 'project plan informs development'... seems like a good way to undermine chaos to me. an aim... gotta have an aim.

and it's very true about doing the little things as they come up. that's true even in the kitchen.

By I_ArtMan, # 12. May 2008, 01:29:56

avatar
I tend to put the little things off in favor of big things. It's always a bad choice, and I should know better.

By noah counte, # 12. May 2008, 01:52:55

@ Scott,

there is a Greek expression,
"I put my tent on fire to avoid the bed bugs' bites."

A big pain will accumulate by adding the small ones.
Going for the big decision once and for all ,
it saves you from a greater grief in the long run.

By ellinidata, # 12. May 2008, 02:17:21

avatar
Thanks everyone for your advice.

Things are finae, just hectic. I just have to stay a bit more focused & disciplined than I really want to be right now. I have to get back to looking at my to-do list & re-prioritizing everything on a daily basis. Once Jeff is out of school, he'll help me get caught up one some things that I simply haven't had time to do.

It is simply not time yet for a business plan. This site is still very much in a trial and error phase, i.e. I cannot yet see what I need to do past the next month or so. The more people I talk to, more filming experience I have, the longer the site is online & I see what videos are being watched & not being watched, I will be able to see the big picture. I just need to be patient.

By CultureSurfer, # 12. May 2008, 02:25:18

avatar
that's a plan in itself... wait and see.

By I_ArtMan, # 12. May 2008, 03:02:43

avatar
It is a plan - it's just easier to see trends/benchmarks if it's written down. It's also more work, in it's way. But it saves you work too, because it reminds you of some sort of core direction, even if you aren't clearly defined.
