Le Tour de Demetri

, , ,

Demetri Kolokotronis rolled into our driveway last Thursday & stayed for the night. Jeff prepared him a good cyclist dinner (spaghetti, of course) & Demetri regaled us with stories until about 11 pm (until we told him we had to go to bed-lol), & we got a few more stories out of him the next morning before Jeff accompanied him out of St. Louis towards his next destination in Illinois. I've never met anyone like him & doubt I ever will again. They broke the mold when they made Demetri, that's for sure.

Some Demetri FAQ's

The man, himself:

Demetri is 76 years old.
He lives with his cat in a house in the woods near Woodstock, New York.
He heats his house with wood that he chops in the woods & brings back in a trailer on his bike.
He has a car but hasn't driven it in 15 years (that means trips to the grocery store via bike with a trailer in the dead of winter, on ice-covered roads).
He taught skiing until 10 years ago.
He was a mountain climber & did 1,000 ascents.
He used to be in marketing/pr.
His dad was Greek (and he told us his Greek ancestors were athletes as well)
He grew up in St. Louis.
He loves talking about history, particularly aviation.

The bike trip:

Demetri is biking from Oklahoma City back to his home in New York. (1338 miles or 2153 kilometers)
He chose Oklahoma city because he stayed there with a friend he hadn't seen since high school.
He bikes about 50 or so miles per day.
His bike weighs 90 pounds with the saddle bags.
He cooks most of his own food (carries a camping stove).
His bike is 35 years old!
This is Demetri's third major cycling trip in the U.S.

Just so we know whose bike it is.

Directions in a Ziploc bag attached to the handle bars.

I could not stop staring at his arms. I couldn't get over how his bicep looked like what you'd see on someone is his 20's. I mean, this guy is seriously ripped. Relatively speaking, the bike looks older than he does.

I am 43 and I look older than him.

Looking at Dimitri, makes me have some hope.

By Captivevet, # 15. July 2008, 12:01:42

He gave me hope, too. I have had several relatives who's developed Alheimer's, so to see someone this age in such great shape, with a really sharp mind was wonderful.

Don't cook with aluminum cook pots or pans. There is some evidence that aluminum poisoning has a connection to Alhzimers. Off to work now.

Time to give up the smoking, cases of Milwaukee Best in the can, and the constant desserts. j/k, that's my neighbors, not I. :yuck:

Dax, the company is called In-Bev. People are very concerned because Anheuser-Busch has been extremely philanthropic, heavily supporting the arts & culture & various charitable causes over the years. People fear that this will not happen with In-Bev in control. Additionally, there is the question of how many people will lose jobs.

I just hope In-Bev surprises us in a good way.

By CultureSurfer, # 15. July 2008, 17:28:59

avatar
I know the company naomi.
It's Belgian-Brazillian, and started out of Stella Artois, to Interbrew, next merge with the brazilian company, I believe, it became In-Bev.
If they hold an opening ceremony go ask them about the support for cultural events.
I don't expect many, if any at all, jobs will get lost. But yes I would be worried too.
In-bev runs things in a hard and harsh way.

It is the end of "Bud", they will cheapen the receipe, and eventually start consolidating. It won't be just St. Louis that will be hurt. I am shocked that it has happened.

By Captivevet, # 15. July 2008, 20:44:26

avatar
Yup, the money game at full speed.

By daxonmacs, # 15. July 2008, 20:47:33

avatar
The only thing left to do is brew your own beer.

By Captivevet, # 15. July 2008, 20:53:12

avatar
Dax, that's exactly what everyone is saying about In-Bev, that they are cut throat. And you are right, it's all about money. I guess the Brazilian who heads it up is Carlos something or another.

Maybe this is our payback for spreading McDonald's and Starbucks around the world?

By CultureSurfer, # 15. July 2008, 20:55:55

Here in Italy most food brands have been sold to big foreign corporations (usually French). It happened when the original founders left their places to the descendants like sons or nephews and they thought it was easier to get the money than ruling the family business.
And the local food shops are closing because of big chains of supermarkets that sell industrial food (that can be also globalized) at lower prices.

By LorenzoCelsi, # 15. July 2008, 20:59:51

avatar
They ruined the beer here as well, at their very own base no less. I can imagine people getting worried.
You left out coca-cola

By daxonmacs, # 15. July 2008, 21:00:46

avatar
Mexicn Coca Cola is still the "original" receipe. It does taste better than USA Coke. It gets bootlegged into the USA and Coke USA really hates it, because they know that it tastes better and they don't want people to konw how much they have screwed it up!

By Captivevet, # 15. July 2008, 21:07:52

avatar
I could use a homebrew beer right now or some Mexican coke.

Not capitalizing the word "coke" above really changes the meaning, doesn't it? p:

I don't do no powders.

Don't get me started on the "Good Old Days". Anyway what I did wasn't unique; I am just lucky that I lived thru it.

By Captivevet, # 15. July 2008, 21:38:10

avatar
One thing that used to be different about Mexican Coke is that they were the last to switch from cane sugar to high-fructose corn syrup. Not only does that change the flavor some, there are people who believe that high-fructose corn syrup plays a role in diabetes and obesity.

7-up recently changed their advertising from "All Natural" to "100% Natural Flavors" because of it containing high-fructose corn syrup. A moment's thought reveals how "100% Natural Flavors" would still allow a lot of other artificial ingredients in the product. It's kind of like a passive lie.

By slackwrdave, # 15. July 2008, 21:53:19

avatar
Yes suggesting, not really lying, but with the same intent.
An old trick by now.

As a regular thing, I don't drink sodapop anymore because I have become a Type II diabetic. I don't understand why they can't bring themselves to offer something to the public that isn't jacked around with wierd chemical.
