VIDEO: HORSE RACE
PERFORMERS: CHAI FOUND MUSIC WORKSHOP (TAIWAN)
INSTRUMENT: ERHU

This is just one of several videos we shot at the Taiwan National Day celebration last week (early, the real celebration is Oct. 10th). The performers are trained in traditional Chinese music but, as you can easily see, they've put a very unique spin on how they play the instruments. One of my Chinese friends commented "I've never seen these instruments played like this before." We were blown away by these performers (average age 22). Hope you are as well.

Note: the group had arrived in St. Louis from Taiwan the same morning as the performance. All I can say is that they must have drunk crazy amounts of coffee before this performance! :coffee:

For those of you bike geeks out there, check out the St. Louis Gateway Cup cycling vids on CultureSurfer Cycling:

More cycling videos coming next week with the 2nd Annual Tour of Missouri videos we'll be shooting this weekend.

I have a friend who plays and teaches the Erhu. it's amazing to watch. his style is ddefinately more traditional than these kids. That was fun to watch and listen to - thanks for sharing.

Naomi 8. September 2008, 18:11

Glad you liked it. Show it to your friend if you get a chance.

Matthew 8. September 2008, 18:20

You bet.

Angeliki 8. September 2008, 20:19

thank you for you msg

Matthew 9. September 2008, 04:08

Ask George Hincapie about Lance Armstrong's reported return to cycling, if you can corner him.

Naomi 9. September 2008, 12:39

 I don't even want to try to talk to Hincapie this time. Not terribly...um... social:

Dying to know why Lance is coming back. Jeff thinks he's got a body image issue from spending so much time with Ashley Olsen.

Mark Cavendish won the first stage of the Tour of MO yesterday. Hoping to snag him for an interview.

Matthew 9. September 2008, 13:23

Well, I'd like to know where the story about Armstrong comes from. Johan Bruneel is denying that he's ever talked to Armstrong about it.

Naomi 9. September 2008, 22:44

That is hard to believe.

What sucks is that he's doing the Tour of Georgia, the Tour of California, but he's not doing the Tour of Missouri, which is #3.

Matthew 10. September 2008, 00:46

WEll, Armstrong himself says it wil happen, but won't announce the team until September 24. Should be an interesting ride.

Naomi 10. September 2008, 17:41

I heard it's Estana, the team that was banned from the Tour this year due to the previous year's doping.

Cool cycling pics of Mark Cavendish (won the first stage of the tour of MO):

Hoping we snag him for an interview this weekend if we can elbow our way past the rest of the media.

daxonmacs 15. September 2008, 05:19

According to qert the Belgian news. Armstrong has announced his return himself on his website. Riding for charitable cause. I hope his legs are strong too. :D
I'll have to wait till I'm home again to watch the video, according to the comments I'm not to miss it!

Matthew 15. September 2008, 12:34

He has definately announced his comback - early reports of the team he chose were premature.

daxonmacs 15. September 2008, 13:07

I could tell you but it would cost you. :D

Matthew 15. September 2008, 13:29

Hahaha. I'm patient. And cheap.

daxonmacs 15. September 2008, 18:36

daxonmacs 15. September 2008, 18:43

Woo hoot, finally gotot see the video. I like it, the music's very good, the choreography on the other hand ...

Naomi 15. September 2008, 20:35

Armstrong rode in a race this weekend in Colorado. I heard this from someone at the Tour of Missouri whose son was riding against him. I may be getting photos from the race & will post them if this guy comes through.

MAJOR flooding occurred yesterday less than a mile from the neighborhood where both Richard & I live. I've posted on it. It's shocking.

Matthew 15. September 2008, 21:05

It was a mountain bike club race.

Matthew 24. September 2008, 19:49

Turns out, Armstrong is going to ride for Bruneel and Astana after all.

Boy, that was a long way around.

Naomi 25. September 2008, 12:24

Matt, check out the video I found of Amstrong at the Leadville-100 mountain bike race back in July:
http://www.culturesurfer.com/sports.htm

Are they letting Astana back in the Tour de France next summer?

Jeff is reading from "From Lance To Landis" & the book apparently implicates pretty much every major cyclist as a doper. That includes Kevin Livingston, whom we interviewed last year at the Tour of Missouri. It's hard to admire these athletes when you keep wondering if they are doping. But I still find the sport of cycling fascinating & can't help but to admire these guys for the psychological & physical pain they put themselves through.

Speaking of doping, Jeff was watching the Green Bay game this weekend & I asked him why they aren't doing drug testing in football, considering that these guys look like comic book super heroes. Is there so much money in football that the sport is able to escape drug testing? :yikes:

I keep remembering Dorothy Hamill's comment regarding her friend Marion Jones & doping, that basically if you don't dope, you can't compete with the dopers. Not suggesting she encourages doping, but she was saying how she can understand why someone would dope.

Matthew 25. September 2008, 20:22

The science of detection is always going be behind the curve. That probably allows people to think they can get away with doping. I'm glad when they get caught, but it does make me sad that they think (well, they know) they have to, in order to be competitive.

Naomi 26. September 2008, 13:43

Jeff says Contador will not play "domestique" to Armstrong on Estana, so there could be some major problems.

Matthew 26. September 2008, 13:45

And Astana still has to ride their way back onto the Tour. It will be an interesting eight or nine months!

Naomi 26. September 2008, 14:18

Which do you think is more bizarre? The election or the cycling scene? I think the election wins but only be a small margin.

Matthew 26. September 2008, 14:24

Cycling has been bizarre for some years now, though this new development rachets things up a bit. The election/economy has become surreal. My jaw hangs slack, and my head spins.

Naomi 26. September 2008, 14:27

Surreal is a very apt description, but check out the blog post on Sarah Palin & you may have to come up with another adjective. :eyes:

Matthew 14. October 2008, 12:01

And.... Armstrong doesn't see certain that they'll let him ride: http://www.reuters.com/article/domesticNews/idUSTRE49D39D20081014

Naomi 14. October 2008, 14:07

Interesting. I forwarded that on to my very own bike geek. :D

I shot a video of Jeff & his friend putting his bike back together. Will upload it in a few weeks, when the weather is cold & the cycling junkies need a fix. It's pretty funny "You cut the fork. No, you cut it."

Make sure to vote in my poll if you haven't already:
http://culturesurfer.com/sports.htm

Matthew 14. October 2008, 14:15

People have been voting.

I've had conversations like that when removing a fixed cup from a bottom bracket.

Naomi 14. October 2008, 15:13

I think I know what a bottom bracket is now. Jeff keeps talking to me about bike stuff I don't care about, in the hopes I will care at some point .

Yup, people are voting. (And there are polls on other pages, too.).

Views are finally back up to June levels on the site.

Matthew 14. October 2008, 15:58

I wonder why it tailed off? It's not like your content has been lagging.
