Kate and the Midas Touch

, , , ,

Call me a culture snob, but there is just something SO wrong with this. What does this say about our values when something like this shows up in :yikes: the illustrious British Museum??? Is this the artist's take on how we equate beauty with wealth? Or is did he do this for shock value? Or is he a nutty artist?

I am betting the statue weighs more than the flesh and blood Kate.

Gold statue created of model Moss
A £1.5m solid gold sculpture has been made of supermodel Kate Moss as part of a British Museum exhibition. Entitled Siren, the 50kg statue was made by Marc Quinn, who described Moss as "the ideal beauty of the moment". His previous work included the marble sculpture Alison Lapper Pregnant, which appeared in Trafalgar Square. The gold artwork will be exhibited with statues by other contemporary artists, including Damien Hirst and Antony Gormley, at the central London museum. Mr Quinn previously created a bronze sculpture of Moss in a yoga pose, which was painted white and entitled Sphinx. The museum has only revealed a close-up section of the new statue, which is also thought to depict Moss in a yoga pose.

'Live up to image'
He also made Self, a bust of his own head created from eight pints of his frozen blood. His statue of Ms Lapper naked, who was born with no arms and shortened legs, was on Trafalgar Square's fourth plinth for 20 months. Describing the gold statue of Moss, Mr Quinn said: "I thought the next thing to do would be to make a sculpture of the person who's the ideal beauty of the moment. "But even Kate Moss doesn't live up to the image." The exhibition, entitled Statuephilia, will also feature 200 plastic skulls by Damien Hirst. Antony Gormley's Case for an Angel 1, a smaller precursor to his Angel of the North sculpture which overlooks the A1 in Gateshead, will also go on display. Statues by artists Ron Mueck, Tim Noble and Sue Webster will also appear in the exhibition. Co-curator Waldemar Januszczak said: "The British Museum helped to make these artists what they are. Now they are seeking to return the favour."

The exhibition opens on 4 October.

Is the artist nutty or the person who originaly commissioned or purchased Marc Quinn's work..?
The decision to host the piece at the BM is certainly a questionable one.
..not up my alley.

CultureSurfer 29. August 2008, 12:11

I agree.

Kate Moss? The beauty of our time? I am such an anachronist! Sorry, I've just never found the anorxic/coke addict look particularly appealing.

AOTEAROAnz 31. August 2008, 15:43

I agree Matthew :headbang:...the more i think about this the more annoyed i get, excuse me. The $$$ incurred is rediculous.
I've noticed this is causing quite a lot of discussion on wordpress sites, amongst others.
nouveau-riche !
Thanks Naomi...

CultureSurfer 1. September 2008, 16:04

I agree with both of you. penguin

Suntana 1. September 2008, 16:43

Sheesh! I know ... that's ridiculous! :eyes:
The artist could have been more efficient and made 2 Golden Statues.
The Olsen Twins ... and would have still had Gold left over.

CultureSurfer 1. September 2008, 21:32

 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love it! The Olsen twins!!!!!!!!!

edwardpiercy 7. September 2008, 18:12

Kate Moss, huh. Well, there's no accounting for taste. Or sometimes artistic taste.

Paris Hilton, done in cheap plaster of paris (how ironic) and painted gold and decorated with cheap rhinestones. Maybe that.

CultureSurfer 8. September 2008, 17:45

What would you do for Britney? :eyes:

noah counte 8. September 2008, 18:00

Britney did a lot for herself yesterday, as far as I can tell. PIcked up a load of video awards, and didn't give the media reason to turn her into a spectacle.

I'll say this for Americans: while we love to see the mighty fall, we're pretty happy when they climb back up to the top.

CultureSurfer 8. September 2008, 18:14

I didn't even recognize Britney when I saw a clip on the news. Someone cleaned that girl up. Finally.

noah counte 8. September 2008, 18:20

I hope they dusted between her ears. It will be interesting to see if she can (or even wants to) reclaim her share of the pie.

edwardpiercy 8. September 2008, 18:58

Good for Britney. I hope she's got her life together now.

edwardpiercy 8. September 2008, 18:59

And I've decided that we should make the Paris Hilton statue as big as the Colossus of Rhodes. Nobody knows how big that was, but it was pretty damn big.

noah counte 8. September 2008, 19:02

Colossal, I'll bet.

edwardpiercy 8. September 2008, 19:04

Could be!

noah counte 8. September 2008, 19:08

I'm just saying...

edwardpiercy 8. September 2008, 19:19

And I bet that the Hanging Gardens of Babylon contained a few plants here and there.

noah counte 8. September 2008, 19:25

And the Tower of Babel couldn't shut up?

edwardpiercy 8. September 2008, 19:30

I wouldn't doubt -- and supposedly it was a polygot tower. That's a lot of talkin going on.

Then there are the Pyramids, which I believe have some sort of pyramidical shape to them. And the Lighthouse at Alexandria probably contained some sort of a light -- though I don't know where they could have gotten bulbs for the thing back in those days.

Hello...all that Kate Moss stuff is all about "money"...yoga too is becoming fast earner! Well...culture-surfer...U are right too...but then my reckoning is that money in the right hands adds value...and in wrong hands "disvalues" ...for now money is getting concentrated more in the hands of people who could not care for what is "conscience"...in India...cinema-crazy people pour milk/beer on the life-size hoarding of heros and heroines...that too in a country wherein millions of children die for want nutritious food...though the "globalization" mantra aids the lucky few at the top...a fair percentage in the middle...but hardly the bottom which is unfortunately the majority...What's this meltdow in US about? It would not be too surprising if one can connect the golden statue of Kate Moss and its chaotic impact on meltdown in general? We need more "conscient" uptake on ideas and events! Bye!

CultureSurfer 6. October 2008, 12:09

I'd say GREED is definitely the connection between the Kate statue & the US economic meltdown.

Please explain:
"in India...cinema-crazy people pour milk/beer on the life-size hoarding of heros and heroines."

yshivoni omfallos 6. October 2008, 13:12

We have big cut-outs of local movie superstars - actors and actresses - dotting various places in the cities - especially so when a new film gets released during festival seasons. The fans of those actors/actresses in an wanton bid to celebrate the movie release, pour kudams (pots) of milk and pour bottles of beer over these cut-outs! In India, the Hindu tradition is to perform "abishekam" (holy bath)with milk, sandal paste, etc during specific festivals as part of rituals. But, now actors/actresses have also become deities for the fans that they perform these "milk/beer" baths in a religious sense (actually it has nothing to do with religion) with the hope that these heroes/heroines would live longer/and their films would run to box-office hits. But in India, poverty and undernourishment continues to plague the country outside the cities in a large scale. So, one can imagine the huge criminal cost these silly celebrations amount to...but ironically the poor too rejoice doing so ... a surrogate relief of a kind! As for the meltdown/Kate Moss link...I shall write further next time around. Thank you.
Bye!

That is absolutely fascinating.

I just watched a great movie this weekend "Outsourced." It's a comedy (but makes a serious point) about American companies outsourcing customer service to India.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LImhTTFu4b8

yshivoni omfallos 21. November 2008, 07:54

Hello...CultureSurfer! Hope U are doing fine! Now what's your take on Outsourcing ?

Yshivoni Omfallos

CultureSurfer 21. November 2008, 15:32

Hmm...I've got complicated views on outsourcing. I know there are business owners who say they can't afford to do business if they hire American workers. On the other hand, our unemployment rate is increasing by the day. What do you think?

yshivoni omfallos 24. November 2008, 07:04

Hello..Naomi! Nice that you have replied. Well...ironically...outsourcing began with a couple of Indians quitting their cushy jobs with the US MNCs and suggesting to the management to carry over the work from India by using the "optical-fibre" infrastructure laid by the MNCs which were not being used till that time. The OF infrastructure was a huge "sink cost" for the MNCs and the partially to the US Government...So it was "wow" really when the MNCs realized that the infrastructure could be efficaciously put to use off-America...So what began was in fact a "pay-back" in terms of technological costs to the MNCs and by default to the US Govt...so the fire became a conflagration in due course...The business sector hardly regrets the outsourcing...but then in due time "off-shoring" has become the norm now...for that queries on losing baggage in ariport, finding ways after losing oneself in an American city and on tracing addresses for umpteem things within US...all the answers are being given back by Indian employees sitting in India of which many Americans are not aware...but how does this affect American economy? Well...it depends which layer of the economic slice one talks about...high-end jobs are still being retained by the US companies...low-end jobs are being outsourced...thus saving thrice over on labour cost...any sensible business would opt for that preposition...but one should not forget that the whole IT and ITenable services sector constitute just 0.2 per cent of the Indian population...as far as India is concerned...the whole "outsourcing and offshoring" business is partially a disaster becos there is not much in terms of "infrastructure"...most they are within the "consumerist" sector even if it is IT...of course Infosys does certain intermediate and high-end research for Microsoft too..but statistically speaking they are just neglible...
Americans should be actually worried more about 'high-end" jobs going to Asians within US on account legal migrants and many becoming citizens of US...which in turn would also affect the 'low-end' job market too as the baby generation reaches adulthood...UK has restricted entering of Asians into their country with a "points systems of essentialism" unlike in US for now...so much for "interconnectivity"...and "integration" of global economy...
What is happening in the name of globalization in India is urban-focussed and is totally misfocussed...any country that ignores agriculture and natural resources is leading to a doom in future...so outsourcing Boeing which is being built 16 countries and finally "fitted" in from US or Europe is not a big deal...when compared what Monsanto is doing in the name of genetic-engineering...and similarly in India lacs of acres have been allocated to the foreign MNCs and Indian subsidiaries which would extend the "ecological footprint" in a suicidal way...present globalization is moving in the direction of an eco-cide! ....

Thank U!

Bye for now!
