Okay, I admit to defeat.

I haven't been online much past couple days. I have been attempting to configure what was supposed to be Carrie's upgraded computer (Presario 7940). I have given up. I loaded XP at least 10 times and after changing the video card, I can at least log into it. The problem still remains that the only IP addresses it can find are for the Road Runner DNS servers.
When I click on what is suppposed to be IE6.0, I get a setup box like I had gone through the menu in IE and selected "Preferences". Tried the Automatic update features, still didn't work. Before giving up, I took out everything except the processor, memory, hard drive and CD-Rom. Still nothing worked or loaded right.
So, for now, I will be putting her old system back together again. Would have been nice to have upgraded her from a 266 Celeron to a AMD Athlon 600. I think I have enough components to play around with on free time, but she's been without her system for 3 days under the understanding it should have only taken a few hours.
