Reasons that made me adopt Sugarsync and abandon Dropbox

,

After using DropBox for over one year (free user) I must say it was a tough decision. I never had big issues while syncing my data between my computers, tablet and phone. I was a great, but not worth paying for, to get some extra Gigs.
It's not only because SugarSync offers 5.5 GBs, it's the features that are most important.
When using Dropbox I always felt bad having to carry one entire folder of files while some very important files had to be copied over "the dropbox folder" in order to be retrieved. It's true, Dropbox offers selective sync, but not as powerful as SugarSync.

With Sugarsync, I can do more. I can map folders to folders without having to create symbolic links to do so.

What made me change was an article at a local magazine and some blog posts such as this:

Better features of Sugarsync:
1) The most important one- Sugarsync allows you to sync any folder of your choice in your computer.(Dropbox only allows user to sync in one folder only- the Dropbox folder)
2) Share folder without forcing other member to lose spaces
3) Able to set read/write permissions for shared folder.
4) Upload files to Sugarsync by sending files to an email address.
5) Sugarsync is compatible with BlackBerry and Windows Mobile besides the famous iphone, Android.
6) Web archive which allows you to backup important data to the web only and not syncing to your computer. It means that you do not have to worry anything happen to your file in your computer will affect those in web arhive.
7) Simple editing of files through the web
8) Desktop software equipped with adequate functions which is neat to use.
9) 500MB storage bonus for each referral and unlimited bonus space until 12/31/2010 (Dropbox only has a stingy 250MB bonus and storage bonus limitation but people still keep promoting it. Come on guys ? something is wrong)
10) Better and more paid plans to be chosen for variety of users.

If you are a big dropbox user, I encourage you to try SugarSync and see the different by yourself. It's really worth it if you are like me and don't plan to pay for the service soon.

    Opera Extensions: AutoPatchWork

    , , , ...

    Probably the most useful extension I've ever seen for Opera 11 is the AutoPatchWork also known as AutoPagerize userjs.
    No, I'm not the author but I'm using the userjs for quite some time now and I hope to see more and more ppl installing it.

    What it does, is when you scrolldown a page and it notices there are more pages it automatically inserts the content below so you don't need to click "page 2" or something like that. It's really useful and it works with a lot of pages such as google, photo galleries, message boards, forums, etc.

    Since the author didn't mind uploading his state-of-the-art extension I modified it a bit and uploaded to my blog with a lot of things fixed (thanks to Penge4)

    Thoughts on the iPhone 3GS

    , , , ...

    Ok,
    So here I am exactly one week after inserting my sim card into the phone. What can I say?
    Where can I start?
    For me it was not a big boom that everyone always mentioned. It's a good phone.
    I like iOS 4.1, it seems to be very stable and the usability is great. I can't say the same for the hardware. The battery doesn't last long enough (if you are one those who simply doesn't carry the charger, this is not the right phone for you).
    Seriously, I hated to recharge it twice a day. The only way I managed to use this phone was to switch from 3G to EDGE.

    Back to the OS, downloading apps are easy and I can totally see why other companies such as RIM, Nokia and Google borrowed this market store system. Before, all we had was Palm and Symbian apps that weren't exactly what you call easy to install/update. This is probably the best thing Apple ever did.
    There is a bad thing about it (despite of the useless apps), I don't see why you have to fill a gigantic form to get started on the iTunes store. Really a pain. Why do they have to keep track of your downloads, purchases, etc. Desktop OS like Windows or Linux don't do that. Why should mobile ones care?

    I'm sorry Apple fans, the new iPhone 4 may be better in lots of aspects but even though you deny it, competitors do exist and I expect this scenario to change very soon.

    Testing the infamous iPhone for a week

    , , , ...

    So, I'm not exactly what you can call an Apple fan (in fact I hate it) but I decided to give it a shot for a week only to see if it catches me like my friends that own one.
    Right now, I'm installing the only piece of software I swear I'd never install - iTunes.
    The model is the 3GS probably the 32gb one.

    Wish me luck!

    SecureCRT & FileZilla

    , , , ...

    I've been using SecureCRT for almost one year now and I must say it's a great tool. I was a heavy PuTTY user for ages and never found anything better. But then I found SecureCRT which had everything I always missed. Session organization is very nice, tabs are great and the toolbars are very useful. You can even create buttons and scripts to automatize stuff. I STRONGLY recommend you give it a chance (if you are a PuTTY user).

    Unfortunately nothing is perfect and I still needed a decent file transfer tool. I use FileZilla which is lightweight and cool.

    Today I developed an integration application. It basically processes all my SecureCRT sessions and exports them into a single xml file. This file uses the format FileZilla can import from. For that end, I present you scrt2fz. This is the first beta. It currently creates only a basic file/folder structure. It still doesn't support subfolders. Hopefully, one day it will.

    So, here are some important facts about it:

    - Handles session name, hostname (domain name or IP address), username, port (21, 22 or custom), protocol (ssh or telnet);
    - Automatically translates Telnet sessions into FTP sessions;
    - If no username is provided, a default "user" username is added;
    - If you use subfolders, you will have to rearrange them inside FileZilla;
    - Still beta;
    - Feedback, please!
