PC Problem -- No sound bytes
Saturday, March 13, 2010 5:54:14 AM
I see Opera has a new version out, and Firefox is my 2nd favorite browser, but as much as I'm dying to download both of them, one problem at a time is about all I can deal with for the time being. After I did multiple scans for viruses, trogans, worms, and malware, I had to do a clean reinstall of Windows XP yesterday, so no new programs until I get my PC working right. It took me 6 hours to reinstall everything, and I still don't have sound, so I don't know what the heck is up with that. Anyhow, I really REALLY want my Opera back, and get back into working with CSS, because that's just some cool stuff!
I still have to upload my webcam, and if I can get my sound working, I'll post a live video of yours truly. Haven't learned to pop a wheelie in my wheelchair yet, but I'll give you a tour of where I spend most of my time.
I also lost all of my links - bummer that, but I'm hoping that when I reinstall Firefox, they will somehow still be hanging around. (Ok, I realize I'm only dreaming there!
) Just bugs me that I lost everything. At least my links for Opera are still available, so that's a start. (And my fiance only "thinks" I'm addicted to the PC?)
Poor Dear - he just doesn't know!

Boot up with that if you do and then load the drivers. Alternatively look up your manufacturer's website for the latest drivers.
You can get your computer hardware specs from a system analyst like Everest Home. It will direct you to third partyware that's how they pay for their freeware.
Just type the motherboard model number and manufacturer into a search box and go to the driver downloads page.
Also get rid of Microsoft's drivers for it if Device manager shows something different to what you remember having originally. C Audio Media or something.
Mine should have been AC97 Realtek AvRak or some such codec. Blinking M$ kept changing it till I got wise.

Shouldn't the web cam work off your Windows drivers?
Not that I am much use. I just downloaded the Motherboard manual for mine and can't find my disc for it. I have no sound controls I can use. I probably need extra codec stuff but don't know what or where to get it.
I just remembered my computer came with all the settings on the HDD I can't access. Motherboard stuff and all. Great.
Now I'm stuck with the hard-wired BIOS and no sound drivers till I grow a Linux brane sel.
I hate reading manuals and I don't like PDFs.

Dedicated Linux magazines (as opposed to PC Pro which is geared fro Windows users like most such mags) always have free distros on them; sometimes 4 or more on one disk. All the office-ware is on them except for third party stuff like Java and Flash.
You modem will just work most likely without any input from you or the ISP. Check out the forums of any mag you are going to try. Some are quite slow. Some mags are for techy types.
It really is a drag being a newbie again. It doesn't help being one of a few dozen in maybe your whole city. Rather like the early days of computing when everyone was a newbie.

Now I'm using a distro that will open YouTube videos and also the browser Konqueror, is a bit like the engine for IE in that it runs all the gubbins.
Not that I have much on a live distro. If I wnat to store bookmarks I'll have to find my USB drive.
Anyway the thing of it is that I didn't need to find any drivers for anything if the distro will load. (Some won't.)
It just finds it all and does it.
That's the difference in outlook with Windows. With Windows you expect drivers of other hardware installs to be default. Then when you use a scanner expect it to work a certain way.
If you use Open Office instead of Microsoft Office, you can be sunk. The Open Office default is to let the Office programme you are using find the scanner and do the printing or saving to file.
Which is probably why it is such a pig. I notice that no self respecting Live Linux distributions use it.
But I digress. Get a copy of a live Linux distro such a Knoppix and it will do everything you need.

I use Ubuntu on my netbook and it works very well.
I don't know much about Windows because I've never used it.
On Ubuntu, I replaced totem, the default media player, with vlc. I use GIMP for photo editing etc.
And, of course, I use the Opera browser.
I've tried other distros, but Ubuntu is by far the easiest to use with almost everything working out the box.
The easiest way to get it (or to get most Linux distros) is to download the .iso from their website and burn it to a cd. It can be run as a live cd (runs a bit slow and quirky) or installed using the graphical installer. It will automagically install with dual booting without messing anything up. (but always backup to a removable media first to be safe)
For usefull tips and good advice, I usually in to http://my.opera.com/Nepmak2000/blog
Just be sure to choose the right version from their website for either 32bit or 64bit according to your computer.
