Welcome

Oh oh

Why do they need to know this, at least this way? To me this doesn't sound like a very good idea. Will the moon be able to recover? :yikes:

I think the Moonians deserve better!

Diabolical 9. October 2009, 00:29

Hmmm.. I'm suddenly thinking about a TV series where the moon is breaking up.. Just can't recall the name..

Stardancer 9. October 2009, 00:59

It's going to be interesting to see if this kind of collision affects the moon's orbit in any way.

Wouldn't it be kinda cool to see the moon wobbling around up there for a couple of days?

:D

Dacotah 9. October 2009, 01:50

Angeliki, me too. :D

Have you thought of it yet Cois?

Stardancer :faint: No, I'd be scared out of my wits.

Linda 9. October 2009, 01:57

I'd rather see them build a research station on the moon, drill into the crust and bring out samples of the core and layers. Looks to me like a better option than bombing when they have no clue what's in there or what effect an explosion like that could cause. Sounds pretty extreme to me

Karen 9. October 2009, 02:02

Ummm, yeah. That doesn't sound too incredibly intelligent...but then, these people do this stuff for a living, so what would I know? p:

Dacotah 9. October 2009, 02:46

Me too Linda. It sounds scary to me. Sighs.

You know a lot Karen.
The moon is a vital part of the Earth's climate. Damage it and who knows, Mother Nature will reek havoc. :faint:

PainterWoman 9. October 2009, 03:30

This sounds like a really dumb idea. How do they know it wont do something disastrous.

Dacotah 9. October 2009, 03:32

Hi Pam, I think it's a really dumb idea too.
I think it is very disastrous.

Darko 9. October 2009, 06:07

India have already done it few months ago but they needed to stop the project because of malfunction in lunar mission spaceship.
http://blog.taragana.com/n/indias-own-probe-also-found-water-on-moon-isro-178430/

Nothing will happen, it would be the same as if the mosquitoe tries to do the same thing to elephant. They will use the plume of dust for spectral analysis. I think it has been already done in one of Jupiter moons... or Saturn`s...

I checked on NASA`s website, it will happen in hext 5 hours

Linda 9. October 2009, 06:09

There was a skit on Jimmie Kimmel show tonight that showed the explosion on the moon---afterward Guillermo (the Mexican? on his show, said "The moon has a donut hole and it showed a picture with a hole through the center of the moon. :yikes:

Dacotah 9. October 2009, 06:18

I hope you are right Darko. :worried:

Linda  :D

Kimmie 9. October 2009, 08:07

This sounds like an idiotic plan if ever I've heard one. Surely there's a better way to test for water? The moon is really important - you'd think they'd be a little more careful?

DrLaunch 9. October 2009, 08:49

Ditto to what gdare said. This explosion is nothing compared to the meteoroids that have hit the moon in the past and will hit the moon again.

Diabolical 9. October 2009, 09:31

Dacotah 9. October 2009, 10:29

I agree Kimmie, it is idiotic way to search for ice or water.

Dr. Launch, it just doesn't sound right.

Cois, I've never seen the show. Thanks for the link.

DrLaunch 9. October 2009, 11:21

The moon is hit by meteoroids and asteroids all the time. A lot of them are more than 100 times the size of this probe and will throw exponentially more debris into space. The proof of many times more violent impacts on the moon can be seen in the face of the man in the moon. The face is made up by impact craters of asteroids more violent than this tiny exploding probe.

Dacotah 9. October 2009, 11:26

I see, but still, how much does hitting the moon either by meteoroids or this have a bad effect on climate?

DrLaunch 9. October 2009, 11:59

This explosion's effect can't be compared to the much stronger effect of the moon moving away from us at a constant rate. It won't have an effect at all.

Since before the earliest lifeforms came into existence on the earth, we've enjoyed a rather stable climate. This is thanks to the moon, which via gravity, stabilizes the axis the earth rotates around. The earth wobbles a bit on its axis. In the past this has led to mass migrations and seas drying up among other things.

In the infancy of the earth, the moon was much closer than today, and it's still moving away at a constant rate. As the moon moves away, the earth is allowed to wobble a bit more, leading to a less stable climate. Even so, todays climate changes are not caused by the moon moving away.

DeeDee 9. October 2009, 13:21

but like i said...why in the world???

Dacotah 9. October 2009, 13:24

I ask the same DeeDee, "Why do they need to know this, at least this way?"

r♡se 9. October 2009, 15:24

Although it does sound a bit extreme, I'm pretty sure they know what they are doing. And why they are doing it.

DeeDee 9. October 2009, 16:25

...but still...:worried:

Darko 9. October 2009, 16:28

Kimmie 9. October 2009, 16:33

Now I've been fed common sense I'm not so shocked. I does sound extreme at first. Kinda like a kid playing with a toy train. Guess I just figured there'd be a more... Scientific (for lack of a better word) method of testing.

DeeDee 9. October 2009, 16:43

...ok!!! but still...

Dacotah 9. October 2009, 16:49

Hi Rose-Marie, I hope you are right.

Me too DeeDee

Hi Darko, I'm glad it's still there, thanks for the link. I just wonder what effect this will have later.

Kimmie, it did sound extreme. They can land on the moon, why didn't they go back there and try to take samples with a machine that good go down as far as they wanted it too?

I just find it interesting that wanted to do this this way to see if they could find ice and water. I hope to read what they found after doing this. The wiki link I gave already knows there is ice and water and why.

Darko 9. October 2009, 17:08

 @ TogaOga

i would like to know that myself??? i wonder if they have a feedback or something to where we can ask questions... hi gdare! how's it goin?

Dacotah 9. October 2009, 17:15

I hope they update their site soon.

DeeDee 9. October 2009, 17:25

me too!

Darko 9. October 2009, 20:19

It`s going all well, thank you :D How about you?

DeeDee 9. October 2009, 20:32

eh penguin

Darko 9. October 2009, 20:39

:bomb: stupid scientists! Why????

Dacotah 9. October 2009, 22:28

Hi Issy, I think so too. I wonder the same, why?

Linda 10. October 2009, 01:31

Well, the meteorites are God's doing---this is man mucking about again with nature. That's what has happened to our natural food chain----man is responsible for too many bad results in nature.

Dacotah 10. October 2009, 03:51

I agree Linda.

Mina 14. October 2009, 13:57

:eyes: it'd be weird to see the moon wiggle. P:

Dacotah 14. October 2009, 14:08

 Yes it would. p:

DrLaunch 14. October 2009, 17:09

Heh. Let's attach lots of rockets to the moon and make it spin around. Imagine how trippy the night sky would look then.

Dacotah 14. October 2009, 18:26

Hi Carol!

Starting to get worried about you... is all well with you???

Dacotah 14. October 2009, 22:14

Hi Issy
Please don't worry. I'm getting better now I hope. I have hope in my surgeon.
How are you?

dɹɐzılpǝkɔıw ɐʞɐ ɹǝɥgɐllɐg lǝbɐsı 14. October 2009, 22:20

Hugs... :worried:

Dacotah 14. October 2009, 23:49

Thank you for the hugs.
I made a new update post Issy.

Fallin Nightbow 20. October 2009, 21:03

:worried: The moon should be left alone.
