Technology? What's all that fuss about?

, , ,

"Do you realize if it weren't for Edison we'd be watching TV by candlelight?" ~Al Boliska.
I don't know who Al Boliska is but I was looking for some quotes about technology. Unfortunately there are about 100 negative quotes about technology for only one positive. And I'm not so sure about how positive the one that I chose is. At least it's funny .

I can't realize why people have this negative general impression about technology. I can only guess that we are not speaking the "same language". Many see the technology as being the latest inventions used by humans - computers, cars, telephones, etc. Wikipedia "says" that "Technology is a broad concept that deals with an animal species' usage and knowledge of tools and crafts, and how it affects an animal species' ability to control and adapt to its environment."

I tend to agree with "Wikipedia's" view. Since forgotten (or unknown) times we are using technology to help us survive and thrive. Many of us are not aware that even naked, in the middle of the forest, we carry our technology with us or better said - within us. The vaccines that we were given when we were youngsters are protecting us even now from all sorts of diseases. I dare you to argue that a vaccine is not technology.

While I write to you I'm using tones of different technologies. All are amazing: plastic, wires and buttons, electricity, transistors or the INTERNET. But there is something even more amazing that the Internet. Something that if never invented we would have never had any of the amazing things stated above. In fact... we cannot imagine (in a sort of "realistic" way) how our world would look like without any of the technologies that we used during our history. To get back at the most amazing technology that I use now while I write to you... the winner is…: WRITING! Writing is amazing!!! I'm not asking you to imagine the world without letters, or numbers. Just... imagine yourself as an analphabet - as a person that couldn't read for its entire life. Imagine how you or your life would be like.
Imagine your life without music or without any picture.

Technology is great and it comes in all shapes and sizes.
Many of us and our ancestors survived because of some technology that they've used. Also, many have died because of it. Technology can be terrifying because of its power...
There is something that we need to remember though. Technology is not evil. How can an object be evil? Only the user or the use of it can be evil. But it can be good also. And hopefully I will light some hope on that too.

Why do we really care about our future.

, , ,

Each and every one of us cares about the future because that's our purpose.

We are a species and the biggest struggle of a species is the struggle for its preservation. Everything that we do we do for our preservation. We eat for our preservation, we have sex for our preservation or we invent new technologies for our preservation. We are not necessarily aware about this but the biggest tragedy for humankinds is its extinction. It touches each and every one of us at individual and social level and it terrifies us. That's why it's so used in our movies or other art forms.
We managed to thrive on our planet and we now have over 6 billion individuals. Considering our size and resource consumption, that's amazing. We are “here” because of the technology that we discovered and used during our entire existence as a species. In the last couple of decades we started to use the power of the atom. Then we started to realize that we are in control of something that can bring our extinction as a species. Lately we are realizing that we are consuming and destroying our own ecosystem. Our advancements in physics, genetics, robotics and nanotech are going to give us more power and thus, motifs of concern. These advancements encouraged new apocalyptical scenarios regarding our extinction. There are good reasons for that. We seem to be prone to failure. Plus, the greatest fear is that "angry" individuals will have the power to commit terrorist acts that will wipe us all.
From this perspective, our future looks grim. Fortunately technology can also bring some hope.
