Dangerous Dave's Dlog

Happy Holidays!

, , , , ,

Happy New Year to you all. I hope you all got what you wanted for Christmas. Or at least what you expected.

Underwear - Check
Socks - Check
T Shirt with witty statement on front - Check
Chocolate - Check
More chocolate - Check
More video games than I could play in a year (about 6 or 7) - Check
Gift vouchers since I'm so hard to buy for - Check
Odd presents for sake of inside jokes (see 1, 2, and 3, plus many more (including a 30 meter hose)) - Check

For many of you, your most anticipated Christmas present was the release of Game Maker 8. I have not yet bought (or even downloaded) GM8 yet, which I have a few reasons for. The main one is the simple fact I hardly use Game Maker anymore. I haven't used it extensively for some time. For the first time ever I am full of ideas with no enthusiasm to create them. Usually I'm full of enthusiasm with no ideas. The second reason is that I no longer live with my parents (and haven't done in quite some years), and therefore the biggest challenge is getting my bank account in the black so I can convince the bank to give me a credit card.

Even though I have no enthusiasm, I have started to create a game for the YoYo Games competition 5. Although it will be a sequel to my best selling game Covert Cooper, the sequel will be significantly different to the original. In the original game, you reached the end of the level by moving when the (robot) guards weren't watching, and hiding under a box (that you carried around with you) when they were looking. This sequel will be an adventure-RPG type game, possibly with non-linear game play depending on how long I make it. Instead of hiding under the box, you just stay in the box and roll around in it, stopping moving when the guards are looking. Instead of the objective being to escape the building, you will have to roll around collecting items, pressing buttons, opening doors, and more. The game currently fits all requirements for the competition, with a button to spare. I have yet to decide just what it will do, but rest assured that in the final game I will have a use for it.

And just to break the news to all of you that haven't heard, Game Maker for Mac is on permanent hiatus since their programmer quit. If you are familiar with Object Pascal (or Delphi) and maybe even Lazarus then send YoYo Games an email and let's get it rolling again!

I downloaded GM8, figured all I had to do was enter my GM7 registration key thing, did so, it seemed to register, but then when I loaded it up, it was unregistered. Lo and behond, my GM7 had gone unregistered again, too. Back to deving with GM6, but this is a big pain. I wasn't super impressed with GM8, although I'm sure it's better than GM7. But GM7 just does everything that I want right now, so I'm kinda in no real hurry to move on. Still, it is newer, therefore, I must have it. Shoot, seeing your game reminds me.. I still have to fix up Attic Toys for your website. *scratches head* It's cool that we'll be seeing a sequel to CC... that was a neat little game, and I'm glad your going to try take things a bit further with it. :) Anyway, good luck with that, and good luck with the new year. :)

So what did you vote in the softwrap/nosoftwrap poll? p

I'm always a slow uptaker. I don't think there's a version of GM that I haven't waited months before upgrading since I started using it.

You sure do smile

That game was made quite quickly, releasing it to get some games on Pointed. This time I'll take a little more time. I'm trying to make it more puzzle like, having to get the key to open this door but to get the key you need to do this first etc. I'm not too good at that type of game design though, we will see how it comes out smile

And the same to you smile. Do you happen to be working on anything for the competition?

That was a pretty neat game. "And the same to you . Do you happen to be working on anything for the competition? " Thank you, and I certainly am! It's a static view, top-down 'sokoban' type puzzle game, and I'm adding lots of interesting things in it, like lasers, and you can push mirrors to redirect the beam. The early 'gameplay test' level I built is pretty promising... I don't think anyone beat it in under 10 minutes. :) [some took as long as 30 minutes] I'm going to have easier early 'introductory' levels, of course, but otherwise, the game is going to be a really tough, brain-basher game, I'm thinking/hoping. :D

Hmm, how many entries are we allowed?

If I were to enter it, it would be scaled down. It would be far to hard trying to resize all the sprites. And it kind of feels like cheating.

Sounds awesome smile Any public demo yet?

Desert Dog writes: "Hmm, how many entries are we allowed?" I'm pretty sure that you were allowed a maximum or 2 in the last competitions, although I can't for the life of me, confirm that. Suffice to say, I think your good to enter 2, if not more. "If I were to enter it, it would be scaled down. It would be far to hard trying to resize all the sprites. And it kind of feels like cheating." It'd be cheating if you just scaled it down! :o :p Don't feel like it's cheating, though.. just because most of us are creating our games from scratch doesn't mean it was unsporting of you do just re-do a previously made game. It's all good in the rules. :) "Sounds awesome  Any public demo yet?" Not a 'public' public demo, but I'm happy to dish it out to people who are interested. :) If you want, I can PM it.. it has 5 working levels in it. :D

bigsmile I may just do that. I could change a few things and do a few updates to make it seem less like cheating smile

The official name for it is "wide screem" (it's a standard computer widescreen, 16:10, rather than the standard TV widescreen, 16:9).

It said "Who says nothing is impossible? I've done nothing my whole life" and was given to me by my girlfriends parents. They obviously think highly of me bigsmile.

Thanks for the info, that's something I'm not really familiar with. :) *goes to wikipedia* "I still haven't finished eating all my chocolate " I think it's time for a change back to the old avatar. :p

Then people will be like "hey DD is pretty cool", and then someone else will say "Which DD?" and then the first guy will say "The DD with the awesome shirt" and then Desert Dog will be sad because he's the only DD without an awesome shirt smile.

DesertDweller Monday, January 11, 2010 9:26:42 PM

Yeah DD's right you ought to get that shirt too DD.

Well you know the trend these days, apparently everyone wants 3DD games. Noone likes 2DD games anymore. So I don't see that you have a choice.
