Pat Robertson's prayer offensive works!

He may be one whack-job televangelist, but Pat Robertson (whom I have blogged before) is getting results from his "Operation Supreme Court Freedom". Seeing that his beloved christian country is becoming increasingly secular (which isn't a bad thing), Pat has started praying to his god for "vacancies" in the US Supreme Court. And since SC justices have lifetime appointments, he is basically asking for forced retirements or deaths.

And his god has been very accomodating as of late. Pat's god got Sandra Day O'Connor to retire, and killed off Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist. That last one reminded me of a certain line in the Old Testament, on god answering prayers:

And [Elisha] went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them. (2 Kings 2:23-24)

Now god has to off one more justice for Pat's crusade. Let's pray it's Antonin Scalia.

Congrats to Opera for ten years of excellence!

Though I've only been using Opera since version 5.0, it feels like I've been using Opera all my life. My internet experience before it is all a blur, like a bad dream we care to forget. Thank you Opera, your browser does live up to its slogan, "The Best Internet Experience!"

Edited to add: To celebrate this milestone event, Opera Software is giving away free registration keys! No more banner ads, no more bitching that you won't download Opera cause it's not "free," no more excuses! Download Opera and see why it's the best browser there is.

Bible studies for atheists

I just finished listening to a new internet radio program, "The Bible Geek," over at the InfidelGuy radio network. The host of the show is the Infidel Guy himself Reggie Finley. The show's bible expert is Robert M. Price, a New Testament scholar and a fellow at the Jesus Seminar. He has written some books including Deconstructing Jesus and Incredible Shrinking Son of Man.

In the program, Bob fielded questions by people who called in as well as questions posted in the InfidelGuy chatroom. I think three of the questions I posted there were read on the air. The questions run the whole gamut, from very specific technical issues, such as one caller's question about the dating of the New Testament; to more mundane topics such as the origin of Christmas from pagan holidays.

The show lasted two hours, as the godless listeners couldn't stop asking good questions about the bible. On the whole, I think the show was a major success. Bob is a very charismatic guest and he explains things in very clear terms. I am now tempted to buy his books online. I hope I can scrounge up enough cash to order it online.

But for now, I will have to sleep. I forgot to mention that the show airs every Sunday at 4:00 PM, which is Monday 4:00 AM over here in my neck of the woods. I hope I can listen in live on his future shows, so that I can interact with the other listeners lurking in the chat room, as well as have my questions asked.

Good night... or Good Morning!

A fatwa against Pat

As most of you already know, American cleric Pat Robertson recently called for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Chilling as it sounds, this is not the first time Mr. Robertson has had his foot in his mouth (as Wikipedia has noted, Pat is a controversial public figure).

In response, let me issue a counter "fatwa." According to the book of Deuteronomy in the Bible,
"[A] prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, must be put to death. You may say to yourselves, "How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the LORD ?" If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him." (Deut. 18-20-22 NIV)

You see, Mr. Robertson has, aside from calling for the murders of certain people, also engages in the prophecy business and in several occasions has uttered unfulfilled prophecies. If we are to take the bible literally, as Robertson and his fellow fundamentalists do, we ought to put Robertson to death since he is a false prophet.

It's cheaper to get rid of him than to have this incident escalate further, after all. And no, I personally don't know about this doctrine of assassination, I'm just the messenger. smile

One small step

Hey, I'm testing out the Opera Blog feature. After using Tripod's services for some time, I've decided to retire my blog there and migrate to Opera. I hope this will be faster than Tripod's, and I hope I can go back to my usual chatty self.
