To My Door

It's a curious thing that we can charge around everywhere trying to give our time significance and memorable milestones, and just end up feeling dazed and giddy. And yet something unforgettable, if not downright exciting, can materialise without our input, while we're resting between bouts of mustdo. Like an unexpected visitor. 1. Nebuchadnezzar the peregrine falcon 2. Rodolfo the possum They might be the bane of some suburban and semi-rural homes in Australia, but in the 20+ years our family's lived on our property we've hardly seen the critters. Live that is. Lots of dead ones (mainly guys I think on the search for territory or advertising females) along roadsides. Then, just last week, our dog Bella sniffed up a storm around the shed: Rodolfo had settled as high up as it could get. It spends most of its days there, peeking anxiously when humans happen too close with their noisy endeavours. Nights? Who knows. It's winter and food is scarce. Perhaps native blossoms. 3. George the magpie 4. Flambeau the peacock Like an event on short or nil notice. 1. Surprising skies Sometime around June 2007 a rainbow appeared after a bit of half-hearted rain. I snapped a couple of pics, but it wasn't til I checked it out on the comp I noticed a bird hovering. If birds fly.... 2. Balloons A chill still early morning in autumn this year. A record 4 hot-air balloons drifted in the skies above the ranges between the Beaudesert area and the Gold Coast. We only see them when it's windy on the coast, and more settled inland. 3. Fires 4. Wind storms On January 7 2006 the fiercest wind storm we've experienced followed a very selective path through out property uprooting or blowing down more than 20 trees. Among them was a full-grown olive (top) and a torelliana (bottom), which was corkscrewed in the ground but still limps along somehow! The storm missed the man-made structures on our place but caused quite a deal of damage to property in the district. 5. Floods Over the next week or so I'll add pics and short descriptions of these unsolicited gifts and visitations. Perhaps I'm spoilt because of where I live, in the middle of 10 acres in rural south east Queensland. But I can't help thinking there's more going on everywhere, and independent of us, if we practice the quiet art of standing still occasionally. While of sound mind!
