The Graphic Novel

Well, this is the blog of Archon, the creator of the DarkSun's Glare graphic novel.
DarkSun's Glare is a story of lost people in a cruel world, ideals demented into sick urges, souls twisted into the machinations of a powerful individual, and the sudden bonds of friendship and their durability and strength. It is a serious story sporting some rather un-serious characters at first glance. Yet each holds his own piece of the story.

The first four episodes are presented in the form of ill-constructed "comic pages" :P However, starting with ep #5 the story takes a different, much nicer form :)

A crafting project

So, yesh. I haven't posted here in over a year. A lot of things changed, and well, keep changing. That, though, is not the purpose of this post. The thing is, I made something I consider original (and I really hope it actually is). A simple idea, but the execution is tricky - a simple shape-shifting pendant. That turned out to be a key-chain instead, but is basically the same thing.

The... Cat... dude... guy

Decided too put Leira's model on hold for a little while. I found that I'm worrying about detail too much, and just kept fumbling around instead of doing someting productive. So, I present you the dude with no name. An anthropomorphic cat-man with a robotic arm and (in the future) a specialized rifle. Yeah... I know.

Rigging and posing. Into a nightmare, darkly.

So, while texturing and trying out normal mapping (you can notice it best around her thigh), I've found it to be quite annoying not being able to see well what I changed on the model. Like, for instance, if I painted on her palm. Rotating and positioning the camera to see it would be a real pain. Therefore, I decided to pause the texture development (since all I do there anymore is paint in an external editor), and rig the model with a biped. I'd have to do it anyway, so I thought, why not now? Another thing to learn and have fun with.

Well... I certanly am learning things. As for the fun part... not so much. So far it has been a real pain, with the envelopes behaving in the most ridiculous ways, the bones moving equally, if not even more insanely, and vertices often being connected to the furthest bones (I found a vertice in her neck that would move with her foot bone!). Still, I'm slowly fixing these little quirks and moving forward. The screenie there confirms it, I suppose.
But, as far as I have heard, no one likes rigging characters. I guess I won't be an exception to the rule, as is so often the case with me irked

As for the model itself - it still requires quite some work. Her face especially - she barely looks like the Leira I imagined. I am yet to find good 3D reference for an anime face... Once I do, I'll put some details there. Or maybe I'll try to feel my own way around it. We'll see.
And yeah, her hands look rough as well, though I don't think I'll be putting anymore details there (other than proper textures, that is). In the intended media, I doubt you'll see her this close up.

Character design trouble

You've probably already seen Leira. If not, I mentioned her HERE. Anyways, I've drawn and designed her with simplicity in mind. Few lines, a small amount of detail, clean and easy to draw. And that's the keyword: draw. That's where the problems start.

When designing her, I reminded myself that I'll be drawing her over and over and over again in animations. So, I thought to make it easy for myself, and made her as she is. With recent development of my efforts, I've come to change the base of my project: catapulting it from 2D into 3D. So the obvious thing would be to make her a character model - a process that I am completely baffled about, given her design. What seemed so simple (and it really was, too!) in 2D, gave me a headache in 3D. The main problem was her coat and overcoat, of course. it had long overlapping polys and made me wonder about how to do the skeleton and the animations and it's physics and clipping problems and... so on and so on.
Given that I'm a newb at this kind of thing, I'd rather not bite of more than I can chew right with my first project.
So, yeah. I changed her. Well, the clothing only, really, but still it was an oddly difficult (not in the technical way - that was easy) thing to do. I guess I just got used to it... I dunno.

Still - Leira's got new looks. And a new dimension. How that looks... Well, I'll post about it soon! bigsmile

Yes, this post is about photos. But first I have to say (in a very scotish accent): Bloody hell! I gotta fix up me blog design 'cause o' that "favorites" thing. Ach. EDIT - There ain't no nothing to see there no more. I fixez it.

Anyway, the point is that I'm supposed to print out 6 or more (preferably not a lot more) of my best photos. These will be the main part of the grade that I get in the end. I'm making a new album here, in which I'll put potentials for printing.

EDIT - 18:10 21.01 - Added some new ones... 10 and up.

Now, I'd really appreciate suggestions here. Which ones should I keep? The deadline is pretty soon too, so I guess I won't get a lot of feedback, but still. What the hey. Thems are intrestin' photos anyways, eh?

Something that happened

This was an actual conversation. Go figure.

"I don't like you."
"I don't like you either."

"Good, then."

"Yeah. Now that we said that, we don't have to pretend to like each other anymore."

"Yup."

Silence.
"Of course, I appreciate honesty, so I like you a bit more now."

"Same here, I'm afraid."

"Just great. We really are starting to like each other, huh?"

"Seems so."

Silence again.
"So."

"Hm?"

"Where would you like to be for the New Year's Eve?"

"Uh..."

"Not the same place I will be, right?"

"Yeah. Still don't like you that much."

"Sure, I understand."

Silence. This time shorter.
"But..."

"Yes?"

"We could try liking each other later."

"I'd like that."

"Yeah. Me too."

They stared into one another's eyes for a while.
"Goodbye then."

"Goodbye. See you next year."

"Mhm. Happy New Year."

"Ditto."

They sat in silence for a little while.
Then they went their separate ways.

Here's another thingamajig:

This is actually the first pic I made - the one I posted last time is the second. Never the less, this guy here is Cross (spelling liable to change). He's also a big part of the Mysterious Project (ooooh knockout ), and will be making more appearances in the stuff that I post later.

Now, the character that I posted prior to this - her name is Leira. All thanks for the both these names (and some others, as well) go to Erik Karlsson Berra - check out his NWN modules and YouTube movies over there ^^
It's that horrible thing that happens in every other RPG game. The joy with which you start up a game just dissapears when you click "New Game" and that headache prompt pops out asking: "Name?".
Ugh.
