Character design trouble

, ,

You've probably already seen Leira. If not, I mentioned her HERE. Anyways, I've drawn and designed her with simplicity in mind. Few lines, a small amount of detail, clean and easy to draw. And that's the keyword: draw. That's where the problems start.

(That's her eye I made as an exercise in drawing in Flash)

When designing her, I reminded myself that I'll be drawing her over and over and over again in animations. So, I thought to make it easy for myself, and made her as she is. With recent development of my efforts, I've come to change the base of my project: catapulting it from 2D into 3D. So the obvious thing would be to make her a character model - a process that I am completely baffled about, given her design. What seemed so simple (and it really was, too!) in 2D, gave me a headache in 3D. The main problem was her coat and overcoat, of course. it had long overlapping polys and made me wonder about how to do the skeleton and the animations and it's physics and clipping problems and... so on and so on.
Given that I'm a newb at this kind of thing, I'd rather not bite of more than I can chew right with my first project.
So, yeah. I changed her. Well, the clothing only, really, but still it was an oddly difficult (not in the technical way - that was easy) thing to do. I guess I just got used to it... I dunno.

Still - Leira's got new looks. And a new dimension. How that looks... Well, I'll post about it soon! bigsmile
