Pondering of the Smartest Mouse

When I am tired of dreaming, then I'll be tired of you.

Did you know?

Johnson Chan recommended me this video named "Did You Know?" in the afternoon. I didn't know what to say then, it was profound and "somewhat ture".
Johnson also told me that this video is broadcasted in every USA middle school and it seems that they are trying to find a dragon slayer to kill the king of dragon country, China, of cause.

1000 A.D. - That root is heathen. Here, say this prayer.

1850 A.D. - That prayer is superstition. Here, drink this potion.

1940 A.D. - That potion is snake oil. Here, swallow this pill.

1985 A.D. - That pill is ineffective. Here, take this antibiotic.

2000 A.D. - That antibiotic is artificial. Here, eat this root.

Time, Love and Memory---Cinema Paradiso

[Alfredo told this story to the young man Toto.]

Alfredo: I'll tell you a story. Just for you Toto. Let's sit down. God Almighty!
Once upon a time......a king gave a feast. The most beautiful princesses were there. A soldier who was standing guard saw the king's daughter go by. She was the loveliest one, and he fell instantly in love. But what is a simple soldier next to the daughter of a king? One day he managed to see her and told her he could no longer live without her. The princess was so taken by the depth of his feeling that she said to the soldier:"If you can wait for 100 days and 100 nights under my balcony, I shall be yours." With that, the soldier went and waited one day, two days......then ten, twenty. Each evening the princess looked out and he never moved! Always there, come rain, come thunder. Birds shat on his head, bees stung him, but didn't budge. After 90 nights, he had become all dry and pale. Tears streamed from his eyes. He couldn't hold them back. He didn't even have the strength to sleep. And all that time, the princess watched him. When 99th night came......the soldier stood up, took his chair, and left.

Toto: How come? Right at the end?

Alfredo: Right at the end, Toto. Don't ask me what it means, I don't know. If you figure it out, you tell me.

[Few years later, Toto has learned a bit more about life, and presents his interpretation of the story's ending.]

Toto: Remember the story about the soldier and the princess? Now I understand why the solider left right at the end. In one more night, the princess would have been his. But she also could not possibly have kept her promise. And that would have been too cruel. It would have been killed him. This way, at least, for 99 nights, he was living under the illusion that she was there, waiting for him.

Alfredo: Do as the solider, Toto. Go away.

Mu-ming Poo's Letter to his students in 2002

Mu-ming Poo is head of the Division of Neurobiology, Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at University of California, Berkeley, California, USA. He is also director of the Institute of Neuroscience, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai, China.

To all lab members:

Over the past several months, it has become clear to me that if there is no drastic change in the lab, Poo lab will soon cease to be a productive, first-rate lab that you chose to join in the first place. Lab progress reports over the past six months have clearly shown the lack of progress in most projects. One year ago, when we first moved to Berkeley, I expressed clearly to everyone my expectation from each one in the lab. The most important thing is what I consider to be sufficient amount of time and effort in the lab work. I mentioned that about 60 hr working time per week is what I consider the minimal time an average successful young scientist in these days has to put into the lab work. There may be a few rare lucky fellows like Florian, who had two Nature papers in his sleeve already, can enjoy life for a while and still get a job offer from Harvard. No one else in the lab has Florian's luxury to play around.

Thus I am imposing strict rules in the lab from now on:

Escape from MSN space

The following are the reason why I decide to move to Opera from MSN space:

1. MSN space is too unstable;
2. I am a super Opera enthusiast;
3. There are too many close friends in my MSN list. It's awkward sometimes to express what I really want to say. They really know me very well;
4. Try something new, make some new friends;
5. Opera blog is easier to operate;
6. ......
