I've just seen yet another news item about global warming speeding up. A team of specialists are now in Greenland taking yet another slice of ice out of the ground to check out how the last time the Earth warmed up compares to this one.
I thought they'd already done that.
Twice.
According to the last two times they ran this check we should in fact be getting cooler right now, but instead we're actually getting warmer at a rate way ahead of anything the Earth has experienced before.
Now I don't give a damn why this is happening, I do care about what will happen if it does. Unfortunately the people in a position to do something about it don't seem to share in my view that the world is worth saving. Businessmen don't want anything to cut into their profits, politicians want people to vote for them, emerging economies want to continue emerging, and it seems like a whole lot of people like the idea that it's getting warmer.
When you get airlines claiming that they're more important than saving the world, building corporations claiming that it's too expensive to build eco-homes, Europe, Japan, and the USA setting themselves targets that are way too low to actually make any difference, and then not even keeping them, and nations like China, Russia, Brazil, and India stating that they're not going to back off because it wasn't them that created all the polution in the first place, a statement that is verifiably untrue, I start to realise that it's all one great big waste of time.
To heck with the children. Let's all just sit back and watch it happen.
