You are imagining this site.

I was going to say "I'm not here" but it wouldn't be true, I'm here, but Opera isn't. It looks like it's here, in fact I can see it in front of me, but alas it is but a mirage, a mere figbox of my fevered miragination, when I fired up the browser I promptly got a warning: "The server's certificate chain is incomplete, and the signer(s) are not registered."

Oh no  . The server's certificate chain is incomplete. I'm screwed. I don't know what that means...

Help is at hand. I clicked on 'Details'. It started with "*.opera.com" and went on to list the whole chain. Halfway down it says "Not valid before", then it says "Not valid after". That must be it then... Um. I still don't know what that means. Let's see what it says under 'Security'.

Ah ha. It seems that Opera doesn't recognize it's Certificate Authority and therefore "It is not possible to verify that this is a valid certificate."

At last it all makes sense.

Well, no, not really it doesn't, but seeing as how it's not really here nothing makes sense, so in that context it makes about as much sense as anything else.

What doesn't make sense is that I've not told Opera to accept or reject the connection, but it's still letting me post this blog.

At least I think it is.

I guess we'll all find out when I press 'Save'.

How do you boot Opera?

, , ,

When I first discovered Opera it was the only browser with tabbed browsing. I thought it was pretty danged amazing and told everyone about it, and they didn't understand. The general concensus was that it was no different to loading up several screens of Netscape, one on top of the other.

I guess they get it now. Me, I'm so used to it that I never close a tab that I may want again in the future. Last year I went to a tax checking site, I decided that I might want to check my tax again this year (If the tax office can lose half the county's personal details then I'm afraid my belief in their ability to calculate my tax correctly is severely eroded) so it's still there. In all this time I've just taken it for granted that when I switched on the computer Opera would be there, exactly as it was when I left it. Sometimes it would scare the underwear off the cat by bursting into song because I'd forgotten to close down a radio station I was listening to, and sometimes it would puzzle the grey hairs off the top of my head by opening up a site that I could not for the life of me remember why I visited. Fortunately a simple click of the 'Back' button allows me to backtrace my thinking patterns whenever this aberration appears, a feature which doesn't seem to be present in any of my other browsers. But most of the time it was just there with everything I've ever thought that maybe I wanted for the last Indecipherable mutter years.

Until it wasn't.

Over the past eons I've included a couple of music sites in the endless list of tabs that is my browser, and it seems that one of them developed a fault. For the past week Opera has crashed whilst going through the mountain of cookies it has to reply to each and every time I switch on. I eventually traced it to this music site, but I couldn't figure out what to do about it. Whilst I'm okaying and rejecting cookies I can't select a tab (OK, I can, but as soon as the next cookie comes up I twang over to that tab...). The result is that I couldn't close the music site tab, so when Opera crashed it tried to load the site all over again next time.

Finally I realised the answer. Instead of mindlessly pressing 'Enter' when the 'How do you wish to restart?' box comes up post crash, press 'Open with a blank page'. I'm supposed to be clever about this stuff. I bought my first computer in 1981, I was hacking before it had a name, I used to write code for a giant computer that took up two floors of an office block, then again, I used to able to write Basic... I can scarcely remember even that now. Still, you'd think I'd be able to remember enough to tickle the grey cells into the notion of booting from fresh.

Hi. I'm back.

Still dumb, but back anyway...
