This and that worthy the effort

Skinning the browser

, , , ,

It has taken me almost a year, but now it is starting to look awesome. I think there are quite a pile of bugs yet to fix, but I simply cannot hold this back any more now. The skin is inspired by the Internet Channel of the Nintendo Wii, but adopted to fit the desktop. Among things needed to be done, was to create new icons. All together, some 250 unique icons were made, and this has taken some time. wink

Replacing icons reveals some funky cheats used in the default skin, and anticipate my icons not working 100% in all contexts. Some icons are reused a number of places, and if the new icon does not have the same ambiguity as the default one weirdness probably will occur.

A default Opera setup should work nice with this skin, but please make sure that the "Panel Toggle" is active. (Tools - Appearance - Panels - Panel Toggle checbox). Also, I recommend enabling the "Personal Bar" and showing images only (View - Toolbars - Personal Bar, right click on the Personal Bar - Customize - Style - Images only).

Enough talk, click the image to get to the real deal. And please leave a comment. Cheerio!

damn, that's one fine skin. should also integrate nicely in my ubuntu desktop also (default theme with dark grey window decoration and highlights ^^, but default opera skin is too cool and shiny for the smoothness of the rest of the desktop)

thx very much

PS: just found a minor bug: when clicking on the bookmarks pannel icon the pannel bar shrinks some pixels (2 imo, does not happen with other buttons, even if they are moved to the position in the bar where normally my bookmarks button resides). Hope you can fix this.

kudos

It looks very nice and slick. I'll try it out for a while, and report any bugs I might find. Thank you for making this public! bigsmile

This looks very nice! However, I always have "too many" tabs open, and that causes some problems with the way the tabs look.

haavard: That's your problem, not mine. p

It's really nice, although I have the same issue as Haavard (currently 52 tabs open). My main problem is that the icons on the tabs gets too small to see, which makes it almost impossible for me to know which tab I'm looking for. Apart from that, I'm a fan, but I cannot use it as it is now unless I buy new (magnifying) glasses p

You guys know about sessions, right? p

I find that having my most frequently used bookmarks (those not in Speed Dial) up on the Personal Bar, favicons only, and saving different tab constellations in sessions really lessen the need for a gazillion tabs open simultaneously. You guys will have to manage on your own; I don't feel any sorry for you. Not the slightest. bigsmile

I cba to log in to all the systems whenever I need them, and I would have to do that when using sessions, right? But, there is room on your tabs to increase the size of the icons a bit, if you would want to... happy

I don't. lol

My next skin might be an effective one. The purpose of this was entirely aestethicly motivated.

Hi, any chance of this making it to Opera 10? It works, but looks rather ungainly, and since this has been my default skin for the past months I'd really love continuing to work with it...

As I commented over at the skin download page, I will try and make this a priority in between diaper changes and bottle warming.
