Shiny fanbOi wallpapers

The logo is, for those of you interrested, made in Illustrator and is 100% vectors. This means I can cover an entire football field with this beauty. Knife sharp! It was made with the 3d tool as an experiment at first, because I never had gotten to do anything useful with this tool before. I wanted to test if it could. My experience was both pleasant and frustrating at the same time.
Making something looking 3d with the tool is easy. Making it look like you want it to not so. I struggled quite a bit with fillets (the rounded cornes) and Illustrator not being capable of handling collision of these. Not being a true 3d modelling application, I'm not surprised however. It's powerful enough to do some cool stuff, but Adobe should do some work on performance. Speed was extremely slow when working with the 3d app in Illustrator. Way too slow.
Most of all I would like to see some reflection abilities in addition to lighting and specularity. The way I ended up making a reflecion, was to expand the apperance of the 3d model, extract the frontmost surface and duplicating it. Then i cut off a nicely curved chunk and colored it with a nice highlight gradient. I also ended up making a slight translucent effect with applying some transparency on the front and back surfaces. With more transparency on the frontmost ones. (You'll need to tell Illustrator to render back faces when making the 3d model.)
The rest of the wallpaper is a simple vertically mirrored instance of the logo with a gradient mask as a reflection, a gradient background and some wavy curves to enhance some depth of it all.
Hope you like it.
Shine on!

Is there an SVG version, by the way?

The graphic is rather complex with lots of gradients, so I did struggle quite a bit with the export engines in both Illustrator and Inkscape to get a .svg that rendered correctly in Opera. Don't even think about editing this in a text editor!
