This old fort gate is the most important landmark of Fort Canning Park.
The narrow stairway leading up to the top of the gate
A replica of the cannon located at the foot of the hill where the fort gate is situated.
Fort Canning Park is my favourite place in Singapore. It is situated on a small hill overlooking the central district of Singapore. It is a place full of nature , history, mystery and romance as well.Fort Canning stills have the evidence of the Malay kingdom that exists in the 14th century.Among the spice garden, there lies a keramat(a shrine bulit in memory of the deceased)of last of Malay kings,Sultan Iskandar Shah.Fort Canning is known as Bukit Larangan.(Forbidden Hill in Malay)because it used to be the palace grounds of the King and it was forbidden for commoners to step into Fort Canning.
When the British took over Singapore in the 19th century, they renamed the place as Goverment Hill.In the year 1850.the fort was built and named Fort Canning, adopted the name of Charles John Canning, the first Governor of India. However, the fort was demolished in the 1930s,leaving the gate. When i explore the gate,i find there is a narrow stairway leading to the top of the gate.At the top of the gate, there is the remains of the cannon that was used to guard the hill during the 19th century.
Many couples also like to come to Fort Canning Park to take photos, because the Registry Of Marriages was located near Fort Canning.I agreed it is a nice place to hang out with my Beloved One too!
