everything but sleep.

It sure has been a while...

,

Hello everyone (no one), I am just testing out the renovation they've given this thing. Opera Community is improving constantly, it seems!

As is the Opera browser itself, of course. I was extremely excited, for one, to see the announcement of Opera dropping its price tag. That was awesome. First it was the 10th birthday party with the giving away of registration keys. That alone was too good to be true. And now this! Free Opera for all! It couldn't get any better. I am in love.

Towards the end of the Opera 7 development cycle, I had become almost entirely a Firefox user. Opera just sat idle on my hard drive, and I seldom used it. However, when Opera 8 was released, I decided I would give the browser another shot. Boy, am I glad I did. Since version 8 I have seen clearly that Opera is indeed the fastest browser on earth. Firefox can no longer even compete with Opera in the area of pure speed. Also, Opera's new, sleeker, cleaner interface cannot be topped with Firefox's bland theme of boredom. I am once again, a 100% Opera user, and I'm happy to say it!

Congratulations, Opera ASA, for reaching these milestones. You guys have proven countless times that you have developed the best browser in existence!

Opera 7.51 and the Chat feature

Well, I haven't posted here in a while, so here goes.

For one thing, the IRC Chat feature in Opera FINALLY works for me now. A few days after I installed Opera 7.51, I decided to try it again, and for some odd reason, it connected and I finally could see a room list. So I have been using the Chat feature every now and then, and I really do like it (although I rarely have time to actually be using it). My nickname is Despero, so see if you catch me online sometime. I usually hang out in #lounge and #opera, and occasionally in some other rooms.

The thing is, I don't think that anything was changed with the Chat feature in Opera 7.51. So maybe it was just pure luck that I got it to work. But who knows. Now I am doubting that anything was really wrong with it...maybe I was just doing something wrong and happened to do it right that one time I tried. Anyway, it was worth it. Opera's Chat feature is probably the closest I will ever get to using an IRC program. I never had any need to get a program like mIRC, and I really don't care if Opera's Chat isn't as good. I'm just a casual user (of IRC), so Opera is all I need.

Also, one bug I reported in 7.50 involving downloading while surfing was fixed in 7.51. So now I am able to download multiple files while I surf the Web again.

I've been using the Emil skin for Opera. I really like it a lot. It's a nice, clean, and simple skin, which is exactly what I look for in a skin. Emil is also the first user-made custom skin that I have ever used extensively with Opera. So good job to whoever made it!

Opera 7.50: First Impressions

They always say first impressions are the most important. Well, here they are...

After using Opera 7.50 for about a week (I downloaded it the night before it was announced on the front page of Opera.com), I must say that I am very impressed. This new final release is better than I ever could have expected. So many things have changed. First off, the interface. IMHO, it looks a lot cleaner and very well-organized. The new icons are great, nice and small, just how I like them. I have heard some people complaining about how the top of the browser takes up too much of the screen now. Well, I am willing to give up an extremely small fraction of the screen to allow a better design and better overall look and feel of the browser. Very nice work, Opera Software!

Regarding the general performance of the browser, I am also very pleased in this area. While there is not too much of a noticeable difference here, it is still better, even if not by much. Opera's performance seemed faster and smoother all-around than before. This came in all areas of the browser, not just page-loading.

Feature wise, among other things, there is the obvious addition of the Chat feature (IRC), which everyone has been talking about. Unfortunately, however, since the very first Opera 7.50 Preview, I have not been able to get this feature to work for me. After I created an account, I was not able to get it to connect, for some reason. This was after quite a long time of trying to find out what was wrong and why it was not working. However, I could find no solution. This is very disappointing to me, because I have been very anxious to try out the new Chat feature, as it seems very cool. Out of all the changes from Opera 7.23 to Opera 7.50, this is the only one that has disappointed me, and only because I could not get it to work. I am sure that otherwise, it was a great addition to the Opera package.

I did like the small improvements made to M2, the mail client. That seems to be working much more smoothly now, which is very cool. It is definitely still the best mail client in existence, just as Opera has always been the best browser.

I wonder why no one has even SEEN my journal. probably not even ONCE.

yeah, seems that mine is the only one that hasn't been in the top ten yet, heh. very fun. maybe I should just give up on it? or ramble on?

give up or ramble on?

ramble on.

it's not 2003 anymore.

well, it doesn't even seem like it, but 2003 is gone. anyway, I spent my new year's eve at a LAN party in an Internet cafe. too much fun.

Playing around with Opera...

Today, while going through the Opera forums, I noticed a few threads of interest to me. For a while I had thought Opera to be slower than it should be, and strangely at times I even found IE to be a little faster. Well, as I always seem to be able to do, I found tons of help on the Opera forums. I learned a lot about the Network section of Preferences. Now Opera seems to be able to load most pages slightly faster for me. For any who may be wondering, I'm using Opera 7.23 (build 3227) on Windows XP.

Welcome! Hello?

Hey, my name's Percy, and this is my new Opera journal. Uhh, that's about it, so thanks for stopping by. I'll update whenever I feel like it, about nothing in particular. Probably a lot of stuff about Opera and how much I love it, and maybe some about music, and maybe some about Web design. So...I hope you enjoy it.
