Apple quietly bumps 30-inch Cinema Display specs[form engadget.com]

In an another sterling example of Apple-related PR oddities, it appears they have recently made a minor bump in the specs of their 30-inch Cinema Displays -- without bothering to tell anyone about it. The revised LCD now more closely mirrors the specs of Dell's 3007WFP, with 400 cd/m2 brightness and a 700:1 contrast ratio, as opposed to the former 270 cd/m2 and 400:1 specs. The price remains the same, at the ever-astronomical $2500, but at least you're getting a little bit more bang for you buck. This spec bump comes not even a week after the display barely edged out the 3007WFP in a heated battle, we'd love to see how it fares now

Thirty Years of Apple

It's been a long fruitful run for Apple, next week the company celebrates its 30th Birthday. But with Apple keen to promote itself as fresh and cool, will the wrinkles start to show as they get older?

Maybe not, Apple is going through somewhat of a renaissance at the moment. Not only is their desktop market seeing an increase in sales, but they have managed to become a major player in the music industry. You can walk down the high street and almost guarantee that a symbolic white earbud will catch your eye. Where Apple struggled in their youth, they have certainly made up for it as they approach middle age.

Apple’s first product, strangely, was a build it yourself computer, which a year later was updated to the Apple II. They were the first to bring you a rich graphical based operating system which was most successful in the Apple Macintosh in 1984. Despite the innovation the company struggled through much of the 90’s, with Steve Jobs leaving the company and a series of failed projects.

With the return of Jobs in 1996 Apple turned a corner and suddenly started to make waves again. While they only account for 4% of the worldwide PC market they posted a record $14billion for its fiscal 2005.

Sony pulls plug on PSone production

After 11 years of existence as one of the most popular consoles of all time, the PSone is finally getting the kibosh from Sony. The original PlayStation, through its original and PSone iterations, has sold over 100 million units, and we're sure brought joy to millions of users worldwide, ourselves included. (Oh come on, Syphon Filter? Final Fantasy Tactics? Parappa? These are true happiness.) Of course, you'll always be able to grab a PSone on eBay if a Spyro urge hits, or just dive into your storage shed to dredge up your original PlayStation, but can we ever truly go back to those days of our youth? The good news is that Sony is working on a PSX emulator for the PSP, and you can always pop an old game into your PS2 or PS3, so hopefully we'll never be far from a little bit of (relatively) old school action.

Vista getting 60% code rewrite?

We're not sure how much we trust the "Microsoft insider" that apparently spoke to Australia's Smarthome News, but the site claims that the source told them that up to 60% of the oft-delayed Windows Vista's code will have to be rewritten over the next several months. Additionally, the company has apparently pulled developers from the Xbox team in order to meet an internal deadline to launch the operating system at next year's CES in early January. Smarthome also claims that Microsoft will also offer Media Center as an "optional package" with Vista, though we suspect that this isn't a new development, but rather refers to the Vista Home Premium version of the program, which will include Media Center and other goodies. We certainly hope that Smarthome's source is wrong about the 60% rewrite; although Microsoft has reorganized its Vista team, bringing in Steven Sinofsky from the Office group, rewriting that much code would take a lot longer than the nine months between now and CES (unless they're talking about CES 2009, that is). Then again, the company could always hire narf and blanka; they seem to work pretty quickly, and certainly know their way around Windows.

Update: Microsoft's Robert Scoble has checked in with the company's PR people, and says that the Smarthome article is "hogwash." Microsoft's PR agency, according to Scoble, says the article is "absolutely not true," and that, in addition to Vista not requiring a major rewrite, none of the Xbox developers are moving over to the Vista team. Separately, Microsoft said that, although the next version of Office will be done in October, and will be made available to corporate customers before the end of the year, retail versions will ship in January to coincide with the Vista release.
