Storm

, , ,

Last thursday The Netherlands (and much of north Europe) endured one of the most fierce storms of the last decade. I had the privelage to have to drive from work to home, a drive that without traffic normally takes 1 hour. I managed to do the drive in severe storm conditions just longer than the hour. How did I do this:
I left early from work, 14:30 since I had an appointment at 16:00 at Amsterdam
I did not obbey myself to the speedlimits, whenever the highway was empte (fluid) I drove flat out.
I did manage to pass some critical points (bridges, high overpasses) before they were closed. The A2 near Amsterdam was closed however, resulting in a longer detour.
What did I encounter?

A truck at the "Van Brienenoord" brigde that tipped over (later all bridges over the big rivers were blocked by tipped-over trucks)

Traffic jams in the opposite direction (a colleage left The Hague at 15:00 to arrive in Roosendaal at 23:30)

Enourmous ammounts of rain (poor people on the bike, they were not only soaked but also fell of the bike due to the wind gusts up to 130 kph.

I arrived on time at my appointment, and I was home for supper on time, so no staying at emergency shelters for me (like the 6000 people that were not able to get home taking the train)

(Nice pick found on the internet:)

Back home

, , , ...

Okee, first of all a happy new year (or like the joke I heard this morning, gelukkig niew haar) and all the best wishes for 2007!

Coming back from the land of the opportunities to the mediocre dark and rainy low countries makes me realize in what small bubble the people of Holland are living. After 3 weeks of the States, there was nothing new on the Dutch news, just some more rambling on the making of the government yawn, yawn, problems that really are not problems.
I start to have the opinion more and more that we do not have a future with this country, that somehow it will always chose itself to be average and every effort to excel will be publicly punished.

I had a lot of problems with the Americans, but going over there made me realise that I have problems with the Bush administration and the people they are representing. Going to the Bay Area, I was surprised to learn that the people I have met have the same opinion on various subjects. Next to that the people I met were really well informed on both National subjects and International subjects. Slowly being 3 weeks in the States, I figured that this is a place where I could live, work and have a future.
I have therefore posted my CV on USA recruitment websites, so maybe in the near future, we will make the big step and leave this doomed country. Or is it the after the holiday blues. One thing that made me really determined to do this year is finding a new job. I really hate to be in a traffic jam for 1 hour (resulting in a commuting time of 2 hours this morning) for a job that does not inspire me and does not feel rewarding, or feel like being rewarded.
