From the mouths of ...............

Simplicity,i presume

Innovation=Functionality+Simplicity

, ,

Seriously speaking who needs a cellphone with built-in cigarette lighter though it might earn you a few points with the ladies in the bar or a PC fitted with a coffee maker which would save you from a countless trips to the kitchen when you are glued to the screen chatting with that brunette you meet on the train.

These and all the other crap like a remote control for a computer and an inflatable PC are called useless innovations.That is innovations that really serve no practical or theoretical use.Some of them leave you really wondering,"Wheredo these guys get their weed from?"

The greatest innovations of all times have those innovations that created a completely new thing,new idea or new way of thinking and are practical with their main attribute being simplicity.These innovations have dramatically changed the life of all humanity.Am trying to imagine how difficult it was trying to keep in touch with that French Exchange student ,after she has gone back home,through letters before the telephone,Internet and email.

Some of the greatest innovations in technology are Internet,Google (God bless Google Images),iPod and computer.The list is endless but all these innovations have one common attribute-Simplicity.

Simplicity is a property or condition of something easy to understand,explain or use.In the recent years developers,engineers and designers have been trying to add every possible functionality into their innovations thus making them more complex.Though the people demand more functions,more power and more everything,they want all this to come with elegancy and user friendliness.

And talking about simplicity,there have never been a browser that better explains that point than Opera Mini.Though it packs more functions- small screen rendering,web feed aggregator,low memory device support,bi-directional text support,javascript support e.t.c-than a Swiss army knife,it still has the simplicity of a spoon no wonder it is the second most used mobile browser.

With all this in mind,i therefore conclude that Innovation=Functionality+Simplicity.

Diggers, I recall reading some discussion not to long ago on the concepts of Simplicity vs. Ease of Use in software design.
That was on Paul Thurott's web page in regards to Windows 7...
it sounds along the lines of the article you wrote:

The simplest machine is the one that doesn't exist.

That's what makes my perpetual motion machine so efficient.

Greg Smithgregsmithsays Saturday, August 15, 2009 5:12:44 PM

- nothing beats non-existence for efficiency eh ?
