Today I Smiled

Today was beautiful. Another sparkle in the crooked smile that is New Orleans. Another sun puddle reflection of hope, as returning residents unpacked boxes and walked the block to check on the status of old friends.

Most of the time, I am nostalgically depressed on days like this. The smell of freshly cut grass usually brings me back to the baseball diamond. It lies down the gravel road which runs through the swamp I grew up in. That was back when I owned a dented up metal lunchpail, and my only worry was not bringing in two runs ripping a line drive down the third base line. Simple. And gone...for now.

But I'm no stoic today. This evening I'm satisfied. And very tired. Fullfilled and drained, I am see-sawing on this post. I want to tell you all about the beautiful people I met in a ravaged neighborhood this evening. About the paper work I pulled out of my ass to get the project started on time. About the reponse we had from folks who had lost all hope but were still holding it together somehow. About the community BBQ we're having on Saturday.

About the neighborhood association I helped start today.

I am organizing again and it feels natural, because I'm doing it for all of the right reasons.
I guess wandering around Texas for a month did me some good, cleared my mind...
My schedule is open, yet I work all day and love it. I love it so much, I work at night.
I realized today, that in the present, there is no room for nostalgia.

And everyone who is rebuilding down here would agree.

I believe that there are still some http://light holders[/URL] out there. I hope that they all come back.
