Brian Wheat

, , , ...

I just found Brian Wheat's MySpace page and am listening to his music.

In my travels looking for local music, I hear a lot of musicians. I'm (still) always surprised by the quality of the music around Buffalo. I can honestly say, it's all been great. I haven't yet heard anyone who bored me, or even worse, made me say "they stink." (Well, there was that one cheesey country band a year ago...) Not that I'm such a great judge, either. If anything, I'm easy, I like almost any music within reason.

But once in a while, there is someone who just stands out above the rest. Someone whose music grabs me in some way and I can't get enough.

Brian Wheat is in that category.

A fairly new entry to the music scene and not well-known, I first heard of him from Dan Reitz at the Custer St. basement show. When other musicians are telling you about someone, they must be something special.

But, other than a few show listings, I hadn't thought much about him since. I found him again today on Myspace and now I can't wait to see him play somewhere.

Fossil Rock - Saturday Nov 19

, , , ...

We got out to North Tonawanda to see Fossil Rock play. A friend told me about them and suggested i go to see them. At least one of them works at the same place I do.

So we went to "Turkey Night" at Gratwick Hose, the firehall they were playing at. The drinks were cheap and we might have won a turkey in a raffle, but luck wasn't with us. We got there early and the house was almost full. We barely got seats.

The band turned out to be a six piece - drummer, bassists, two guitarists, a keyboard player who also played guitar and a singer. They only played covers, but didn't take the easy way out. Many were songs you don't hear cover bands tackle often. But many were, too, so people were comfortable dancing and enjoying it. Musicianship wise, they were good, and most of the band pitched in on vocals and harmonies.

While not an original music band, they were enjoyable and would be a good time band for any function. If you see them playing someplace, drop in and check out Fossil Rock.

Welcome

If you've found this page and wonder what it is, take a look at the original page: http://docwu.servebeeer.com

I'm not sure if I will be transferring that page here, posting newer posts here, or what yet. So keep an eye on both. I can map that URL here if the move becomes permanent.

What it is: An account, more like online diary, of my favorite music concerts, events, shows, festivals and gossip about the local Buffalo area music scene. Lots of photos and a calendar of upcoming shows.

My philosophy is to focus on accessible shows, low or no price events, not the big arena shows. Some are downright grungy bar shows, but the best music around, not your typical mainstream radio crap.
