Just wanted to bring TA Spring to your attention 
It's a free open source RTS using the game files (and many mods) made for Total Annihilation, the critical acclaimed RTS. Right now it has many mods available (from WW 2 to future space combat) and is played by hundreds of people daily.
I suggest you defiantly give it a try, everything is well balanced and if you dont like the standard maps + mods you can download tons more, or create some yourself!
